I just aquired a honda 130 with two batteries. There is a switch to run battery 1 or battery 2 or both or switch off. When using a battery charger between trips on the water should I remove any cables or just turn the switch to off and connect charger cables to one battery at a time? Is it ok to charge batteries with switch on?

Re: dual batterys

Always a good idea to disconnect batteries while charging. Spikes are easily generated when connecting or disconnecting chargers. These spike can and will damage any electrical components on board.(accessories, regulator rectifiers, etc.) High charge rates can also upset ECM's and other sensitive equipment.

Play safe....disconnect!

good luck! :)

Does turning the battery selection switch to off do the same as disconnecting the battery cables?

schematic,

What about the onboard chargers that are permanantly mounted and ment to be pluged in when at dock or home. These are low amp chargers.

Would you still disconnect all cables?

kdpboater
I can't speak for your switch, cause I haven't seen it, but, in most cases,Yes. Thats the beauty of having a manual disconnect.

Capt_Ultra
Pretty subjective question, but yes for several reasons.
>disconnected batteries from system aren't drained by the parasitic load of the system
>much less risk of fire due to system shorts when unattended
>less risk of over-voltage damage to sensitive equipment if charger over-charges
>even when chargers are shut down, spikes are generated, which may weaken or damage electronic components

I'd wire in a 'manual disconnect' rather than disconnect cables

Good luck!! :)
