Re: Dual exhaust: what say you?

My 84 chev 3/4 ton 4x4 farm truck had 1 7/8 single exhaust, no catalytic converter from factory, I dualed it with 2" exhaust out the rear with twin 36" glass packs. It was reasonably quiet and improved gasmileage by 2 mpg performance some. It was restricted from the factory? maby intintionally it was a old forest service truck. Mileage still sucked. I traded it for a 92 4x4 ford inline 6 1/2 ton. It does much better if you keep the speed down

It won't HURT anything, but rarely are true duals going to offer any performance gains on a vehicle that is turning less than 5,000 to 6,000 RPM most of the time. True duals are for race cars, not trucks...and even on racecars crossover systems are very popular. But I don't know flow characteristics of your motor any better than someone else on this site to be able to answer that question accurately. This is a better question for an exhaust company. One of my favorites, http://www.gibsonperformance.com/exhaust.asp
doesn't appear to even offer a true dual system for a truck. Some have split exits for the "look" of a dual, but it's a cosmetic thing only. They fully acknowledge that their dyno tests reveal that a true dual system does not normally make anywhere near as much power or performance as a well tuned single muffler system that mixes the exhaust from each side of a V configuration motor.

Unless you have serious engine mods, 3" pipe is a total waste of money and may be more prone to rust through.

For a stock engine, 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 are more than adequate.

Example: the late model Town Car 4.6 v8 gets a 15hp boost with optional duals (and crossover) over the single exhaust. No other mods involved. And it keeps those cemetery quiet mufflers and resonators. And the factory pipe is only 2".

And for heavens sake, louder is not better!!!
