Re: dual freq transducers

One freq will give you better results in shallow water, the other will work better a depth. If you fish in diferent area,s and depth, dual freq. is the way to go.I,m sure someone else will chime in and give you the advantages of specific freq.(wich one for depth, witch one for shallow).

Jim

Re: dual freq transducers

Jim is generally right. There is basically pro/cons to each. Water absorbs the sound frequencies that the transducer uses to detect the depth and objects in the water. Higher frequency gets absorbed more than low frequency. So the 200Khz setting, may not get to the bottom of ocean floor, while the 50Khz does. Unfortunately, the larger wavelength also means that the accuracy of the returned signal is proportionally less so you get less useful detail.

Lower frequency also spreads more, giving you a view of a larger area below although whether this is a benefit of disadvantage can be debated.

From what I recall, saltwater absorbtion is also higher so low frequency mode is even more useful here.

I highly recommend that you get a dual frequency unit. I routinely use mine with split display so that I can get the benefits of both.

Amir

I agree the 200khz frequency is good in shallow water as it give more detail. Like a school of shad your would see each fish. A 50Khz may look like a big blob. 200 also better at seeing fish on the bottom where the 50 the fish will look like part of the bottom. The 50khz does have one advantage over the 200khz in shallow fresh water if you are running downriggers. The 50 khz you will likeky be able to see your down rigger balls. With the 200Khz unit most of the time will not see your downrigger balls.

In Saltwater over 200 feet the 50 khz unit and high power is a must to see deep fish.
