I have a '99 Lund Tyee Grand Sport 1850 with a 4.3L Mercruiser, Alpha 1 and a 9.9 Merc kicker. The 4.3L is has power assist steering. Both engines are steered with two separate rack & pinion cables attached to the same helm.

I'd like to replace both steering cables, because the steering is extremely stiff. I've read where the helm should always be replaced with the cables. From what I can find out, Teleflex no longer sells the dual helm system like mine. They now sell a single helm, with a single rack & pinion and two cables coming from the same rack. Both cables are the same length.

This setup won't work for me because the kicker cable needs to be longer than the 4.3L cable.

My question is, can I get away with replacing the racks and cables without replacing the helm, or am I asking for trouble?

Re: Dual Steering Cable Replacement

sure if the cable racks are still avalible. if you have to switch to the dual cable rotary you can always order the proper length cables. if the current rack helms are not damaged there is no reason to replace the helm part.
