So my BIL and I were out at the campground with my wife and sister taking down the screen house for the season. We decided to go fishing in the late afternoon and head out to see if there was any action on the lake. Fished for an hour or so and decided to call it quits and troll back to the dock with a couple of crankbaits. Trolled for about 5 minutes and noticed the trolling motor was losing power. Decided I better try to fire up the O/B while there was still some juice left...no dice. Pulled the motor and started paddling. After about 400 yards in 45 minutes and trying to figure out why the hell it was so hard to move this damn boat (we had about 100 yards left to the dock) my BIL says, "hey, did you pull the anchor up?" (u saw that coming, huh?)
I just about lost it. 10 lb mushroom anchor on 40ft of rope and we pulled that thing 400 yards or so...it was brutal..in the dark by that point sweating profusely and getting eaten alive by the bugs. Lesson learned. Even worse, I went out the next morning with a charged battery to fire up the O/B and head down to the ramp and it still wouldn't start. That's when I realized it was still in freakin gear! Had I been paying attention the night before I'm sure there would have been more than enough juice to fire it up....of course it was a blessing in disguise because I would have run over the rope with the motor and probably ended up with even more problems than simply feeling stupid!
At least I know I didn't underestimate the battery life....I just assumed I could pull an anchor across the lake!!!
