As I was putting the boat in the marina for the season today I was wondering if it is only searay that mounts battery switches in the engine compartment on cruisers.Factory instaled switch is in engine compartment, to get to it you have to remove stern seat, peel up the carpet, and lift the floor. then put it all back. I did move it under a seat where I can get to it.... do the people that design boats actualy use them  ? Just had to vent.

Jim

Every boat I have owned, the battery switches are in the engine compartment ( 1 bayliner, 2 regals, 1 sea ray and now a cruisers). I usually don't turn my batteries off. Durring the summer, the boat is in a slip at the marina, connected to shore power (and ready to go at any time). In the winter I pull all of the batteries while the boat is dry stored.

Electric engine hatches have forced them to stop that on some boats . . .

My mechanic had done some rewiring on my boat and ran the + wire off the alternator directly to the batterys. Problem was, he ran it thru the manifold and it was rubbing the hot part attached to the head. I had 2 deepcycles, both were switched on. Way hom at 2 in the AM engine coughs and running lights flicker and then all back to normal. I stop pull engine box as this had worried me, and then with engine still running as I'm watching it happens. System starts to short. The engine died and I turned off the switch instantly saving the day. The 1 second it shorted was enought to ruin all the wires. Your searay would be a total loss with possible injury to you and crew. Move the battery switch.

Hey merscrewser.. glad everything turned out good for you!And ya I did move it over the winter. It was a real pain last summer, I was trailering most of the time but realy noticed the issue when I spent a few days on a lock system, no power hook ups at nite, needed power but needed to have power to start in the morning what a pain getting to the switch.everything is is ran properly... had to buy new cables so they where long enough, well worth the time I invested.

Jim
