Parts finally arrived from US.Ready for carb rebuild (gaskets,needle/seat replaced). All my hoses are on with cable/zip ties.Do I just yank em or try and cut ties. Also when cleaning do I use any carb cleaner.Do I just spray cleaner or drown/submerge over night.

Re: Dumb Carb questions

Depends on how bad the carb is. Some carbs i've had to let soak over night some I just use carb spray. Once you get it apart you'll know, the ones I've had to let soak are the ones that either had water in them or gas that has turned to varnish. Cut the zip ties and dispose, I try to use proper gear clamps when possible but ties will work in a jam.

Those aren't just ordinary zip ties. They have a buffer stip under the clamp, and are shaped especially for fuel line fastening. Once you get used to them, you'll find that they are both faster and more effective than worm clamps, and a lot cheaper than FI clamps.

I agree Martin... I buy mine from my local Merc dealer by the bag...I also have the tool that pulls them extremely tight and cuts them in one operation...Your point is well taken that the worm clamps can cut the hose. The factory uses these as do the repair shops and don't have problems as the low pressure fuel pumps are going to blow fuel past them...they don't use these for fuel injected engines as the higher pressure would blow by them...

Used prorperly worm clamps work perfectly, it's those who overtighten them that wreck hoses and lines.

You can also get these thru handimanmarine.com in the electrical section. Their item number is 160538 and is direct replacement for the OMC style.

Don't forget the big rubber flat high speed seal, or you will be taking it apart again!
