Hi, I am looking to purchase a new boat and am seeing a lot of make about deadrise. What is deadrise and is it bad for my health? Thanks,

If you look at the back of the boat, you will see how it forms a V at the bottom. The higher the degree of dearise, the more pronounced the V is. A deep V is good for handling and speed through rough water, but is more difficult to bring up on plane, requiring more power to do so. A shallow V comes up on plane much easier requiring less power, is generally faster, but is uncomfortable in rough water and does not handle hard cornering at speed as well as a deep V. What do you plan on using the boat for?

The boat is a SeaFox 23 walkaround with 18* deadrise. I will be using for family fun but would like to be able to travel to nearshore reefs (up to 30 NM out). Does 18* sound like too little for nearshore? Thanks for the help....

Sea Fox 23' looks like a good entry level offshore boat...looks like it could handle 6' seas or better no sweat. I would NOT try to ride a storm out in it though. Would really be kool setup with 25 mile radar coupled w/GPS display on a low profile flybridge for two. For offshore use I would go with a single big engine and back up 25 HP long shaft rigged with push prop. That far out you need a REALLY good VHF radio and weather band radio. In addition by law, you need to take the Coast Guard safety course and ESPECIALY a navigation course if your going that far off shore. This class of boat offshore is akin to almost getting a pilots license.
