dumb question about replacement prop

replacing prop on older 1500 mercury.new prop is identical # as old prop,but there are 3 small holes at the base of the prop,right in front of each blade on the old prop.there are no holes in the new prop,can someone tell me what these are for,and are they neccesary?

Be thankful! Those are ventilation holes that allow some exhaust to escape and create bubbles. This enables the engine to rev a little quicker during hole shot. They have no effect at higher speed. The only down side to those holes is if they were made too large.

Yep you can run the new one as is and see if your holeshot suffers and if it does drill the new prop like the old one so it can slip a little on take-off. Be carefull of the holes being too big or out of place though. They aren't necessary but can be helpful.
