Dumb question how does the controls work??

Got a 1969 EvinRude 40 hp motor with non electric shift, remote has only shift and accelerate shifter.

Question is: Where do I place the shifter to start the motor (where is neutral) and where does the accelerator shifter go front or from the back. (bring the accelerator forward to move or back to forward to move) I sound dumb but I'm asking because the starter will not kick in so want to make sure I have it in the right mode if not then some thing else would be wrong like the ignition switch or faulty wiring.

The remote has nothing on it to indicate what is what.

I did try to by pass the ignition but got nothing but some clicking from the motor, I was 10 feet away lying on the floor of the boat so couldn't see what was going on at the motor. Anyway that's my issue right now.

Thanks for any help

With the lever straight up the outboard is in NEUTRAL which where it has to be to start the engine. Pushing the lever forward does two things. The first thing that happens is the lower unit is shifted into forward. Continue to move the lever forward and the engine speed increases. The same happens when you move the lever backward except the lower unit is now shifted into reverse. The farther you move the lever the faster the engine runs and the faster the boat moves. Movement in reverse however is limited because going too fast would turn your boat into a swimming pool as water came over the back. The lever needs to be in neutral for the starter to engage. That's so you don't pitch someone overboard by trying to start the engine with the throttle full open in forward or reverse.

There is 2 levers not just one, so the second lever starts from the back and you pull it forward to accelerate? or starts from the front and pull back?

Accelerate by pushing forward. This opens the carberator butterfly valves. It also advances the ignition timing. The motor will start easiest with the throttle lever pushed slightly forward. If you push the lever too far forward when trying to start, the starter will not engage, (when you turn the key) due to a safety switch.

Purfect thank you, I was doing it right. So moving on to another possibility of why the motor will not turn over.

Thanks for your help

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

also bad switch, or wired wrong.

Yeah the wires inside the motor (harness) where bridal and the jackets where crumbling. Removed the harness to rebuild it and with harness off I tried to engage the starter with a fully charged battery and she came to life, she had some gas in the carb and she started up and ran for like 4 seconds.

Noticed once I hooked up the fuel line and primed it up the carb was dripping fuel, I guess I have to rebuild the carb huh. So glad the motor runs not for long but she starts up...
