Re: Dumb Question?? Where is the **** hole ??

I ran the motor in a home made water tank ( 55 gal Drum ) last night. It was on for about a 1-2 mins. and not a drop of water came out of the exhaust relief at idle. I shut it down for the night because I don't want it to overheat. Now my question is does the thermostat need to reach a certin temp. before it open up and the water come out the exhaust relief ?? or should sign of water be there right away. My other engine water is coming out the **** hole as soon as it starts but I not sure about this one. If there should be water so I can order me a water pump kit and install before I start it up again.

Thanks

Yes. You probably didn't run it long enough for the therm to open

I believe water should come out be sure the motor is in the water as it would appear at rest on a boat.At least up to the mounting beacket.

very true, i use 1/2 to 3/4 up the leg, exhaust will also blow water away from pick up, in a barrel. the water pump must be submerged, it is not self priming.

kleverrr1,

"new to me..." generally means you should check/replace the impeller/water pump. And gear oil is not a bad idea either. Enjoy your new motor!

Re: Dumb Question?? Where is the **** hole ??

I have the water level in the drum about an inch over the cavitation plate so the water pick-up screen are submerged, but the exhaust may be blow water away now that you metioned it. Maybe it I run it with the ear muffs I can get a better result. So should there be water right away or must the motor reach a certin temp. before the thermostat allows the water to flow, I just want to be sure?? I just ordered a new impeller since I am not sure when the last one was put on there, because Yes this motor is NEW to me.

Re: Dumb Question?? Where is the **** hole ??

I know on my 76 15hp I have to rev it up quite a bit before anything will come out, this is on muffs and before someone jumps on me for doing it "i'm not worried about blowing it up" :)

And running in a barrel is always better than muffs.

It is a 1976 Johnson 70hp

70hp should ok on muffs, it's got the water pickup grates like the newer motors. Shine a flashlight on the pickup and look for debris.

Yea, your model should work with muffs. water should shoot out below the lower shroud, out the two exhaust holes:cool:

TD, nice old Ski Twin you have there.:D

if you are think of this picture, it is and older motor, don't even remember what it was, just used it to show, parts. actually the pic came off the forum. but i have several.

running 76 70 on muffs is ok, should get better circulation with muffs.

Re: Dumb Question?? Where is the **** hole ??

Ok, I will run it on the muffs and wait for the thermostat to open so I can see some water run out of the exhaust relief holes. I will still do a water pump replacement and lower unit oil change before. I go out and give it a good run in the ocean.

Thank you all for your help

Re: Dumb Question?? Where is the **** hole ??

Just as a precaution, don't wait too long for the water to spit from the exhaust relief ports. If you let the hose run a minute before starting you should get some water fairly quickly.

Test the cylinder head with your fingers, you should be able to hold them there for a three count anytime the engine is running if the cooling system is working properly.
