Hello everyone, I have a DUMB question
I just bought an old galvanized 3 axle trailer for both piece of mind (hurracane season) and boat maninetance. Anyway I have a Monterey 262 (6500 dry weight) Im sure the trailer is enough since its for a 33? boat and was in use last year. My question is, Im not going to trailer my boat, only take out of the water and move 100? from the ramp for mainenance would it be ok to use the trailer with only 2 axles and are the leaf spring on the pic good for it?
The are in ood condition and solid, rust is not compromising structure only cosmetic. My question comes due to the srings being only 1 leaf, that gets thivk in the middle and skinny at the ends not like the springs a see arround with more than 1 leaf.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Ps. I just bought all the wheel bearings, seals, missing hub

Re: Dumb Question

Given the limited info we have, and assuming nothing grossly stupid has been done .... A simple check.

The rating of the trailer will be the weakest of the axles, tires, springs, or frame.

If the tires on it are rated for at least 1750# each; you should be OK for at least 7000#.
Look for the rating on the sidewalls.

And for going 100 feet at 2mph, most anything will work.

Re: Dumb Question

1433 lbs per tire

1433 x 4 = ~5700#
That will include the weight of the trailer.

5700-800 = 4900# Houston! We have a problem! :faint2:

I guess there was a reason it once had 3 axles!

1433 * 6 -800 = 7800#

We all know you are going to do it anyway. :eek:
Be sure to Inflate the tires to their full rated capacity, and move it the 100 feet slowly. :D

Re: Dumb Question

Nahhhh..... thanks for the suggestions. I rather pay the extra $150 for a new wheel & tire than pay for a tow truck or crane or what ever if I breakit while in use... LOL,

Thanks again,
1 more thing, on this old spring leafes it has, how can I find the weight rate?

Lots of luck finding that out!

The initial assumption was that all the components were matched.
Again, Assuming no one has done anything grossly stupid;
The axle and springs are assumed to be rated to match the tires.

My crystal ball says the tires are 205/75D14 Load Range "B" at 35psi!

Re: Dumb Question

as for moving a boat 100' or so on a trailer that's a wee bit overloaded...

I suppose I'm the king of proving it's do-able! The trailer sports a single 25,000# Spicer axle, with four 15" HD tires (rated at 6300# each I believe) with 150 psi of air in 'em. You can see even in this pic the tires are about half flat, but they take it! Trailer weighs an estimated 6 to 7k#, boat is about 34,000#. Trailer is a work-in-progress, but it's moved our boat in & out 4 times as is without issue! This pic was the first pull...

Yikes !!!! Not a trailer I would trust, even for just pulling the floating condo out of the water. You have been lucky...

Hell, that's about what our airplane wheels look like. I work on the new Citation X here at Cessna. It's max takeoff weight is about 37,000lbs and sits on 4 tires with 210psi in each. They always look a little flat!

But those tires are designed for that load, air pressure and that's what they look like by "design". The tires on this trailer were not designed for the load, maybe the air pressure, and certainly are not supposed to "look" like that.

Re: Dumb Question

Here's what my trailer tires actually look like under full weight-- they're not THAT bad...

============

and FWIW, the guy who moves my boat, moves MUCH heavier things around than it is for a living. He assures me that for 'parking lot' use these tires are just fine. And the trailer proper has can support twice my boat's weight. I'm just in need of another axle or two!
