dumbest thing to date

I had the worst airhead moment yesterday and had to be the dumbest boating related thing so far. Went hook the trailer to the truck to head out for fishing yesterday morning, got the trailer on the hitch ball and got distracted. As I lowered the toungue jack and noticed a little grinding noise so I got some lubricant and lubed the jack and then folded up along side the trailer. Went in the house got the keys and jump in the truck, pull the boat out the garage and headed down the road. As I got to the end of my street, stopped and wait for traffic to clear before turning left onto highway 32 I heard a strange thumping noise. Looked back in the rearview mirror and see a car behind the boat so I thought that car must have hit the boat but nahh couldn't be! Turned onto 32 and went about 1/4 mile @ 45mph, as I stopped on a left turning lane to get on hwy 67 I felt another thump and jerk. Crap! maybe the tranny is messing up, so I thought. As I got about half way up the on ramp, a moment of clarity came over me and I yelled holly sh...t I didn't finish hooking up the trailer! Pulled over and jumped out the truck, the toungue was sitting on the ball, the cap wasn't down, safety pin was out, safety chain wasn't hook up to the hitch, electrical connector wasn't hook up. I don't know how the trailer didn't pop off the hitch but all I could said was thanks God!

Re: dumbest thing to date

I had a trailor disconnect on me towing my yard equiptment, I hit a bump.. I had to ride it out to the side of the road.. I was so lucky the thing didn't flip on me.. I found that the locking pin broke off and the turner lock backed off.. I said a prayer that nite thinking of what could off happened, I was lucky that the road only took off 1/4" of the tongue. The chains saved me and the trailor..
Now this is really funny: my ex forgot to lock the king pin in the semi truck and when we were getting ready to leave with our load we dropped it in front of 40 guys having lunch, plus the boss of the company was out there watching.. I never heard so many guys laugh, I was of course one of them.. The hard bounce in the truck wasn't very fun, and the cranking of the trailor jacks was just to funny. Plus we had 2 boom and sizzers on the flat bed..

hard to believe, that, that small peice of metal is all that holds our pride and joy to the back of the truck...done the same thing once, only it was with a four wheeler and and old aluminum boat, looked over my shoulder as i hit a bump, and watched the boat launch its self. Good thing there were no stern straps, cause the trailer would have taken it to the bottom.

Belchy

I was pulling my 18' clipper uphill 45 deg. and the trailer popped off the hitch at the top. There were people and children all over the bottom of this road because it was also a public launch. The trailer started rolling downhill causing me great alarm and panic because I couldn't do anything about it and no way for a fat man to outrun this locamotive.

Re: dumbest thing to date

About six years ago, i bought a 18' bayliner trophy from a friend of mine at my hometown on the quebec-ontario boarder in newyork, and i work and live in central mass.now which is about 330 mile trip. The trailer had been sitting for years with no maintainance. So i had to replace the tires and checked the bearings which one side seemed bad so i replaced that side and had to redo the trailer wiring for lights.I finished about 8pm saturday night, headed out about 6am the next day.I checked everything at about 60 miles and was ok....checked again at 150 miles and was ok. So i figured i would be fine to make it all the way home.So at about 250 miles looking in my right side mirror, i thought i could see the right tire moving alittle....i said nah...its just an illusion with the white line....so i kept going. About 3 miles from my house, rounding a curve..i was hearing all kinds of racket, but still drove home.Got home....jacked the trailer up and pulled the whole wheel asembly off with my hands...it was totaly shot....then i am thinking....holy crap...how the hell did i make it home.....makes you wonder if sometimes there is someone watching over you.

scary, ain't it, what can happen when you interrupt your routine. My boat liberated itself from the tow vehicle once, there's a thread about it around here somewhere but I don't want to think about it anymore. :)

Know the feeling had a trailer with old screw down hitch had been traviling about 300k's and stopped for a pee decided to check trailer and found screw just sitting on top of hitch and found no internals of hitch so trailer just sitting on ball nothing holding it there still had about 300k's to travel and is middle of night in middle of nowhere walked 20m back down road and found hitch internals put back together secured screw with split pin and continued home lucky I needed to pee.

moral of the story is: drink plenty of fluid when going on long trip with your boat in tow.. :D
