1977 Aquasport 222 INBOARD. New 350 SBC/ 375 HP long block. Marina put boat in water with intake sea **** closed (flush position) and upon leaving marina and running at low RPMs for about 10 minutes, I noticed temp was at 230-degrees F from lack of seawater. Temp did not peg at 240, but stayed at 230 or so during the 5 minutes at 1100 RPMs back to docks. I have no idea if the temp gauge is accurate.

Found **** closed, hooked up hose at dock and temp went down to 110-120 and ran fine at idle. My concern (paranoia) is that the engine could have been molested to an unsafe degree, even after a relative short period of time at 230-degrees.

I need comforting.

Many automotive engines run with a pressure cooling system.----That raises boiling point of coolant in the engine.-------I would be concerned with condition of raw water pump impeller .----Best to do an inspection.

Lack of water in the cooling system will inhibit water temp sensors from getting a good temperature reading. If you have open cooling, then no water would be at the sensor, gauge reading is meaningless. Closed cooling will not share that issue. Check your pump and probably golden.

Thank you, racerone, and Capt. Stephens your words make a whole lot of sense. I have open cooling and feel rather ignorant to not have thought of that. I will check the impeller for sure.

I have a plastic tag that I put on the key that says “seacocks closed”.
That tag has saved my engines more than once!
