Oh dear. Link, I suggest you google "The Ashes" combined with "Test Cricket". This is the most competitive series of 5-day (yes... FIVE days!) sports action that exists. And there are five of these five day test matches. This is the halfway point! So, no, it's not over yet, and no, please don't go back under your rock - come out and support the underdogs - which (for a drastic change) are us Aussies! :)
Hey tnx fer the reply
Wasnt expecting that since I was just being a SA! :) Im not a normal Yank as I dont follow sports. I even give all my friends here a hard time about "football" as in it should be called "Throw Ball" Scoccer should be called FootBall!
Did the google thing... Holy Crapola! You Blokes have been doing this since 1887! Good thing to be
competitive. You might not believe this but even though Ive heard of Cricket I dont have a clue as to what it is or how its played.
It being the 16th I guess the games are over now but from what little Ive read, I venture to say that neither side would agree that the Best Team Won! :D :D :D
Cheers and agn tnx fer the reply

Hi link

It's only just over half way.
The ashes series is played over 5 x 5 day games, the one that has just finished was the 3rd, the score at the moment is 1 win each and the last game was a draw. The next match starts on Thurs week and the last one starts on 8th Sept, it will all be over by 12th Sept.
I don't know if you can get any coverage in the US but if you can give it a go.

you can get coverage from the bbc via the internet :)

Ihave discovered that a lot of Americans have difficulty in understanding the rules and field positions :(

Like RPJS said, give it a go :)

The English and the Aussies have a cricket rivalry that goes back to the 1880's (and probably before that), it's an obsession. The Ashes, to us, is like the holy grail - mecca - valhala etc, etc..................

For example - Manchester (the site of the just finished game) is a fanatical football city yet while the cricket was being played, the football stories were knocked off the front pages of the newspapers. This is a town that is seriously fanatical about it's football!

It would be difficult for an 'outsider' to get caught up in the hype that surrounds this game - especially the 'Ashes' series.

I hope you give it a try and watch some of it, but don't be surprised if you just don't 'get it'.

Aldo

Link and James, and any other American following this.
You have to look apon cricket as a giant game of chess, except it is far more intricate.
If that dosn't make sence, then look at it as a battle, with 2 opposing Generals marshalling the resources they have, to be able to win.
This is over a 5 day period, so there are hundreds of battles taking place, but you have to win the war, and that dosn't necessarily go to the side that won all the battles.
The Test match just finished is a perfect example.
England pretty much won all the battles over 4 days, except the last battle on the last day.
I have always been amazed as to why America has never taken this sport up seriously, as the nature and logic of it must appeal to the American mind.
Cheers
Phillip

OK now that Vaughaun, Ponting & friends are taking a short break we can get down to the important match.

ENG V AUS
THE FANS ASHES

The Barmy Army have challenged the Fanatics (those Aussie fans who turn up to the cricket dressed in canary yellow!) to the Ashes match of the year.

It all starts at 12pm on Sunday 21st August at Stafford Cricket Club.

A BBQ will be laid on and Channel 4 will be in attendance to film it for their cricket show. Please come along and support the Barmy Army team and partake in some serious sledging. It shouldn't be too difficult as there will be more blonde highlights around than in the Aussie dressing room.

Directions can be found at
www.staffordcricketclub.co.uk

If you would like to volunteer to score or umpire please email

This has got to be the game of the season.

Ok RJ, I am happy to be vidio umpire for the match.
Please make arrangements to have cameras at all stratigic points on the ground. (Bar, female cheer squad changing rooms etc)

I will be completly impartial with my judgements, however any prior donations in used notes only would be appreciated.

Remember you aussie supporters, a win by you guys will give added incentive to Ponting and the boys,
THE FUTURE OF THE ASHES HINGE ON THE RESULT OF THIS MATCH
So good luck and keep drinking.

Re: Dunaruna, Kiwi Phil & Get Reel

The ins and Outs of cricket ( Just to clarify the rules for our American friends)
There are 2 teams of eleven players.
At the start of the game both captains go OUT onto the pitch for the toss.
The captain who wins the toss decides which team will be IN. The team that is not IN then go OUT onto the ground. Two members of the other team also go OUT. the other members of the batting team stay IN the clubhouse.
The team that is not IN then bowl to the team that is IN, until one player is OUT, the player who is OUT then goes IN to the clubhouse, another player from the team that is IN then goes OUT to the pitch. then he is IN. This continues until all players fom the team that is IN are OUT except one batter who is not OUT. Both teams then go IN to the clubhouse, then the team who were IN go OUT and the team who were not IN are IN so they go OUT.
This continues for 5 days unless both teams have been IN 4 times

Simple really

I so hope your right whaley, Sunday was a monumental victory for England, (137 runs).

The Aussies did keep thier end up by winning more than thier fair share of the drinking games.

They need to be careful Aldo, such an old bit of kit might well break if pushed to hard :p :D :D

The weather is looking better today. 60% chance of rain today 30% for the rest of the game with low cloud cover. Look out for lots of late reverse swing :) :)

Hmmm, not a bad first day for either side, but dropping Pieterson may well prove costly for Australia. Bl00dy English weather strikes again, but so far it's about even methinks.
