i bought this for 100 dlr i plan to convert it to a sea boat , building a stand up console & will be looking at increasing the draft \displacement around the transom area as i would be fitting one of my 70hp or 60hp Johnson \Evinrudes on the transom , iam a bit concerned about water coming over the transom with the weight of the motor & 2 , 25ltr fuel tanks . ive got a plan in my head , to weigh the motor & all the gear fill sand bags put the equivalent weight on the boat & then place the boat in the water then mark the displacement line where the water will be on the hull , from that line i want to build some pontoons around the stern area on port & starboard side of the hull below the water line & on the inside of the transom build a scoop that will catch water coming over the transom & drain out through holes in the transom again , this is only a 3.8 meter boat , also a water tight deck the seats that are fibreglassed in i will cut out & fit 2 swivel seats .

Any plans & advice would be appreciated , i will more than likely fit this motor

do not modify the hull just so you can use a motor you have on hand. Fit it with the correct sized motor and no bigger. No point in risking your motor and a swim home over a $100 junk boat.

It's a 12' boat. Stick with something 15 hp or smaller. Your 60/70 will sink the boat or if not crack the transom.

If my conversation is correct, that's a 12'+ length boat? And it sounds as if you intend to convert it into a RIB? In your coastal waters?

I can appreciate your desire to do this, it even sounds like as fun project. But I am afraid it may be ill conceived, depending on your ability, knowledge, materials available and skill.

The sponsons will need to be quite large, I think, to offset the changes you envision making to the center of gravity and buoyancy.

I am sure we will enjoy your process and progress, so take lots of pictures, videos of your launch and a current will on file.

Luck

Re: Durbans new boat

the guy i bought it from used a 50hp , i just need to get the transom a few inches up above the water line as there is not really a big weight difference between the 2 motors , so i was thinking to fiberglass 2 rib tubes on the port & starboard side towards the transom just below the water line that i will be marking with all the weight on and at the same time it should give more stability ,because the narrower you go & reduce the center of gravity the more wobbaly you , the wider you go & reduce the center of gravity the more stability you get what you think i should do

+1 You would be much better off getting a small motor for that boat and/or finding a larger boat for you motor.

The money invested in trying to get that boat operational and safe with your motor will be much better spent on a larger hull designed for your motor. The larger hull will also be safer in the Sea.

I know from you're other posts you have great skills and you could make it happen but in the long run you will end up with an albatross and still want something else.

IMO, fix the little boat up sell to make a little more $$ and get a bigger hull.

Instead of building up the outside of the hull so it can work for your motor, buy a 16' aluminum, strip it down to bare hull inside, drop your 12' hull in it, and off you go.

The tail is wagging the dog here.

good idea you gave me thanks , i will build a stand up steering console cut those seats out fit swivel seats a scoop in the inside of the transom any water coming over will then go out cut the deck fit a fish hatch that will be fiberglass to the hull on the inside & outside to make it water tight fit a bun plug in the inside of the fish hatch so that if you wash the hatch water will drain out through the bun plug at back of transom fiberglass the hatch to deck water tight , fit a cushion on the hatch cover to make a seat while fishing , find a scrap 40hp fix it nicely build a new trailer paint it using my epoxy formula .

then sell the lot at good profit , to buy my dream boat

i ve changed plans iam gona put all the equipment , petrol , 2 persons weight & motor on the boat place it in water , then mark the waterline on the hull & then raise the deck about 4 inches above the waterline & make it watertight &below the deck i will fit foam that does not absorb water so the boat then becomes unsinkable fit 2 scuppers on the transom , any water on deck will then run off , then no need for bilge pump

well you are not asking for advice or opinions, and clearly you are not interested in either, but are determined to put a thousand dollars time and material into a $100 12' boat, overpower it, to end up with a $100 homemade boat. All we can do here for you is pull up a lawn chair, pop a beer and watch.

Let us know how it turns out. Be safe.

my 100dlr boat 3cyl 70hp compared to a 3 cylinder jet ski , i don't know witch is over powered more ? I suppose its got to do with weight distribution

Apple vs orange comparison, Durban. Makes no sense to me.

Though weight distribution is a consideration in rigging it is the design of the hull, rigidity and performance at speed that make a lot more difference in rating a hull for outboard power.

I pretty much agree with the above advice. Not enough boat for that much power.

By the way, Happy Birthday! :)
