I thought i read somewhere that if i did not have a DVA tester i could use an older needle styled meter? I cannot seem to find where i read this...sorry

Doesn't matter where you read it.... I have always used the analog (needle) meter... checking resistance and voltage output, ground errors, etc.

You can also use a Peak Reading Volt Meter(analog) for checking output voltages.

You can use an ordinary ohmeter to take static readings on the stator coils / charge coils / sensor coils.---------You must have a reasonable quality meter or your answers mean nothing.-----The DVA meter takes output reading from those items when cranking the motor.

The DVA readings are the most critical ones to follow.

The thing to remember is that ordinary voltmeters, whether they be digital or analog, measure the AVERAGE voltage. When you get into modern CDI ignitions systems, the voltages come in fast pulses, with much "off" time between them. The ordinary meter will attempt to average them out, giving false readings. The DVA (peak reading) meter detects those fast pulses and stores the information for us humans to read.

F R that was a very good explanation of the DVA peak reading, even I could understand it' I wish more of you heavy hitters spoke/write simpleton :)
