DVR vs PC?

For security camera setups can a PC stand in for a DVR? If so, what does it take?

Given the low res of most security cams you should be able to store huge volumes of info on a comp....Just plug in a terabyte hard drive there about a 100 or so...Or just just store say what 50 gigs and burn them to cd when your done..Cant do that with a dvr...

One DVR system I was looking at, you downloaded to a computer thru a USB port. A review I read said it was very slow.

I am looking at running two or three cameras so I guess I would need a program that would handle that.

You still down in Tigard. I think about you when I drive by.
