I am trying to set my dwell. Points are at 19. Dwell meter reads 10 on the 8cyl setting so x2 for 20. Should be 30-34. I set points to 22, meter reads 8 (x2=16), so I set points to 17, still at 10 (x2=20). I get the impression my meter is junk............Is this going int he right direction? (smaller gap, more dwell)? BTW the tach side of the meter is not working at all.......

81 GM 2.5 2 bbl

Re: dwell setting

Smaller gap = higher dwell angle.

Your point gap should be .022in (0.5mm) and a dwell of 28 - 34 deg.

Either your meter is toast or you are doing something wrong.

Re: dwell setting

Jh!!!!You've been around long enough. Install a Pertronix II and you won't have to worry about dwell. ;)

Re: dwell setting

I just got that from a buudy of mine. Of course the only people who are in touch with this stuff is boat people....Everyone else, Including the parts store says "points, jesus, I havn't seen a set in years"!

This will explain why the reading isn't changing. Thanks
