I personnaly know the first person that got a DWI while boating in Maryland.
Hi name is Paul K. Can't give the rest. This happened in the late 80"s
Paul decided to take his new(new to him) re-powered bassboat out for a spin.
Usually it would be ok but Paul had had a few too many.
So he loads up his wife and newborn son (2 1/2 month old).
He takes the family to Sandy Point State Park, In Annapolis ,Md. There he unloads the boat and pays no attention to the wind which is blowing about 20 knots at the time. He heads out the inlet and is in ROUGH water NOW!!!
He thinks he should maybe head back in and turns the boat and capsizes.
Luckily the Coast Guard was right there and saved the wife and baby and Paul.
The CG turns paul over to the Md.State Police who immediatly arrest him and charge him with DWI and reckless endangerment of a child(later dismissed).
He managed to get his boat off the bottom but salt water has a way of screwing things up for a long time.
He ended up loosing his drivers liscense for a while and paid 1000$ fine and 6 points.
And his wife to this day wont get in the boat with him or let his son go either. Jerry

Drunks kill people on the water, too.

I don't allow any alcohol on any boat of mine. . .in or out of the drinker.

Boating and alcohol don't mix. They should have locked the guy up and threw away the key. It's only luck and the US Coast Guard that saved his sons life.

We have shrimp fests with bands in the summer down here. Last year a local fisherman who frequents one of our blue kitty holes, was anchored up well out of the channel for a night of fishing. A drunk punk in daddy's 31' cigarette was cruising drunk from the concert, ran over his small boat killing him instantly. He was anchored in a spot that I frequent also, so even though I didn't know him, it really hit home. Punk was caught 2 weeks later when one of his passengers could keep quiet no longer. I think he got 2 years for vehicular manslaughter. What a waste.

Re: DWI and the water!!!

Weekend late afternoons are pretty amazing on the larger lakes around here. Whether you're on the lake or at the ramp, there are a lot of folks who have had a few too many during a day of boating.

I don't go out on weekends hardly ever due to this and the general crowding, but once in a while I do, and I'm always reminded of why I don't.

The ramp is especially bad, with minor collisions and major delays on the ramp itself due to overconsumption. There never seems to be any law enforcement, either. It's a bad scene.
