I fear I have a carb problem but I hope something else that is an easier/ quicker fix.

Ok the back beat goes on... thanks guys

it it was a battery issue- for a new battery and it start and runs...

NEW PROBLEM

It idles fine high and low - goes into gear and runs well ... even heads toward top speed and gets really going and then does out.

after that it runs on low speed ok but when I try to go full throttle forward it wants to choke out and die.

we had a dry rotted fuel hose from where the couple meets the motor to the fuel pump(?). And we replaced it with a piece Of hose from the fuel line with the pump bulb.

hopenthis made sense - thanks in advance

Repeatedly attempting to obtain high rpm with a motor that has an issue will cause catastrophic damage to the engine if it is a fuel lean condition.

If you found one rotted line they all need to be replaced.

Further more, that one rotted line most likely let grains of crud get into carb orifices. Remove and clean all orifices. A plugged orifice causes the lean condition.

This is all just typical maintenance.

In a perfect world you dont let them get to the point of failure.

Are you running VRO? Might as well look at oil line and check warning system while you are at it. If it is still a 3 wire VRO update it or delete and go premix.
