Are E-tec and Optimax basically the same technology/performance?

I've seen the E-tec infomercial about 5 times now and the other engines they compare with are 4 stroke or "classic" 2 stroke. I'm guessing an Optimax would be very similar?

Re: E-tec and Optimax

Negative.....Optimax and the std DFI Evinrude are apples to apples. E-TEC is well beyond that.

Re: E-tec and Optimax

no optimax is not the same as evinrude d.i.
mercury are using what is refered to as an orbital engine. back in the 80's o.m.c. looked at orbital and ficht technologies and decided to go with ficht
e-tec is the next generation d.i. technology motor its a simpler design than ficht motor because it uses less parts
probably the best thing you could do is to go to mercury's web site and then to evinrude.com and compare technology's for yourself

hope this helps

Re: E-tec and Optimax

orbital uses compressed air to assist in pressurizing and atomizing the fuel. FICT and E-tec just use fuel pressure. the method of pressurizing is different for e-tec and fict.
thats why the opti-pop motors have that rube goldberg modified 5hp water cooled air compressor up top. but from what I hear they have nost the bugs worked out and the mercs seem tohold up. the 19 dollar a pop plugs that must be changed at 100 hour intravels are pricy but seems all DFI motors are rather hard on plugs.
I remember not long ago the opti-max and the ficht plugs were 30 dollars or so apiece and would not last 50 hours. so its getting better.
