E-Tec diagnostic cable

I'm having a problem getting my laptop connected to the diagnostic connector on the E-TEC.Using the Serial to USB cable gives me an error... Serial ports on a 2007 of any type seems pretty Primitive Anybody having similar problems?:/

some brands of USB to serial cable adapters do not work correctly. Radio Shack's adapter seems to work OK as well as a company called Belken.
