I think the E-tec is the best outboard on the market faster more fule efficency great all around motor. I have a150 e-tec on my 18ft flats boat 80mph+. and four 250 e-tecs on a 36 contender 92mph.

Each manufacturer publishes performance reports for their various motors on different types and brands of boats. These are available on the manufacture’s websites. This, to me, seems the most unbiased way to directly compare motors, as the reports are objective date directly from the respective manufacturers as opposed to owner’s opinion, belief, or viewpoint. It’s interesting to compare various motors when you can fine different types/brands of motor on the exact same hull. I researched many of the reports before going to 4-stroke outboards. With popular boats such as the Ranger 620VS, one can, easily compare the E-TEC, the Mercury XS Pro, and the Yamaha 4-stroke. This set of reports is for the 620VS.

Evinrude E-TEC

In this test the Yamaha is the fastest and the Mercury has the best mpg.
This is typical of the many manufacturers’ reports on like hulls that I’ve compared. Sometimes the 2-strokes are slightly faster; sometimes the E-TEC has slightly better MPG. I’m not saying that the Evinrudes aren’t great motors. I’m am saying the edge held by any brand or type of motor is extremely slight when compared on a level playing field.

It's pretty hard to find a bad outboard these days, E-Tec's are nice and have their pros and cons just like any other type of engine. It's more important to select the right engine for your boat and what you plan to use it for as well as access to local service than the brand of motor itself.
