E-Tec Tech Inquiry,-

Many outboarders know that the [E-TEC] has had [its] share of problems. I know "up north" in Canada and Alaska where outboards are put to the test they have not a lot of fans.

This is quite funny. On the E-TEC OWNERS GROUP forum there are two very active participants who live and boat in Alaska and swear by the E-TEC.

Also, the same technology as the E-TEC (direct-injection two-stroke-power-cycle) is used in SKI-DOO snow machines, which obviously are used in northern parts of this continent. SKI-DOO is the market leader in snow machines (or snow-mobiles) and their engines are all based on the E-TEC.

All outboard engines have their "share of problems."

Many outboard engine owners know that there is really ZERO statistically relevant information about the frequency of repair record of particular engines, brands, and models available to the public.

One dealer that has a weekly radio program...

Outboard dealers with radio shows are interested in self-promotion. They are not inherently oracles of fact.

The more you read the more you know. I might know some that swear by E-tec as they sell used ones. Some report that Tohatsu have good 2 stroke direct injected engines. Mercury was suppose to discontinue Optimax. Some outboards have fewer problems than others. Why do 4 stroke companies carry DI 2 strokes for sale to the US? Because we are not allowed to import superior and MORE reliable regular 2 stroke technology.

OMC had problems with their 1st Generation of Direct Injection Engines(FICHT). I had a 98 150 FICHT, and though it never blew up, I always felt it was more of a case of When it would Fail, not if it would Fail. Mine received all the Upgrades(reprograming the ECM and new Heads), and later a newer complete Powerhead. As the Warranty was about to expire and any further work was going to cost me money, I traded for an I/O. During the pretrade Inspection, the Powerhead, with about 45 hrs on it, already had a Scored Cylinder(Neat little Score, the tech wrote).
The 2nd Generation were Called RAM Injection and most of the Bugs had been caught., but the problems put OMC out of Business.
Bombardier of Canada bought OMC and eventually released the 3rd Generation, which is E-Tec, which have proven to as Reliable as anything else on the market.
XD 100 is BRPs Premium Oil, and is a Synthetic, and is formulated to reduce and remove the type of Carbon that is formed by Combustion in a Direct Injection Engine, which is a much Harder Carbon than produced in a regular 2 stroke. As mentioned, if the engine ECM has been set for XD100, then only it can be used. Myself I would use XD100 at the TCW-3 setting just for the extra Detergents. It is only 7% a gallon more than XD 50, Brand Name Jug at my Dealer.
As for 3rd Party Oils, well you pays your Money and take your Chances. Most oils are not formulated for DI engines and TCW-3 Oils were a Major Contributor to the problems with the FICHTS. I remember that Chevon Techron and and OMC/BRP Carbon Guard were recommended Additives. Maybe if the 3rd Party Oil Marketer were to cover any Powerhead Failure, I might consider them, but without actual Documentation and Proof, No!

They still blow up.....just less frequently.

Quite likely because most have blown up, and there fewer left to blow up. I am referring to the original FICHTs there, the E-Tecs have been pretty good

Thanks guys for all the nice tech info, but the orirginal owner payed the money it was pawned for to my friend and the nice purchase opportunity was gone...The local E-Tec dealer wants $ 83 for a gallon of XD-30 an insane price to pay for. Can imagine what the other 2 XD50 and XD100 will sell for...

Without knowing what Peru's Currency's Exchange Rate is, it is hard to determine if what you quoted is high. XD 100 sells at my Dealer for about $62(Can) which is about $49(US)

Jimmbo,

It's 280 soles divided by 3.37 US exchage rate which is US 83.00 for a 3.78 ltr/gallon for the red XD 30 oil which is a armed robbery with a machine gun..

Prefer to keep boating with 2 strokes motors at $ 54.30 for a 12 bottle box of Amalie Pro oil which is better than it has to be according to their slogan...LOL!!

Happy Boating
