Bought a 120 Evinrude (e120tlco) VRO. That has sat up for the last 7 years. Cranked up fine. Swapped it out with my motor and ran it last weekend. Ran great all day on saturday but on sunday after about 4 hours it started making a ticking sound that increases with the rpm. Not a faint sound either. Also the sound is slightly apparent at idle. I was thinking it was the lower unit but i have been informed that it wouldnt make this sound at idle if it that was the case soooo back to the drawing board any insight into this would be very much appreciated. Btw compression is 125 on all cylinders. And i have the omc manual

I might run it in the dark, remove the cover and look for a spark jumping.

I Didnt see any sign of spark leaking. Although earlier just to be safe i replace all the plugs as they were old anyway. Also cleaned up all coil pack contacts and changed the gearcase oil. There were very few gliiter like metal shavings but not many at all. And the fluid was really old almost black. When i Cranked it back up after that it sounded better but you couldnt really tell on the muffs anyway. However it stopped peeing. Luckily i Had ordered a water pump repair kit when i found out i was gettin the motor it just came in thursday so i went ahead and changed that as well. and it just stopped peeing so im not sure if the impeller was what was causing the ticking i didnt see any signs of damage on the old one so idk why it wasnt working either. Ill run it first thing in the morning and find out if the problem is fixed.

Anyone else have an ideal of what this noise might be?

Have you checked the magnets in the flywheel? one could be loose ; you didn't say if you located where the noise is coming from.

No Ill take a look when i get back in on thursday though. Thanks for the reply. and it kinda hard to tell where the noise is coming from. You cant hear it at all when its on the muffs.

One more thing to check,
A bad VRO pump or VRO running out of gas can
make a loud clicking noise.
If if it is sometimes pumping primer bulb
to fill it will shut it up?

Pumping the bulb does not take the noise away and pressure is not loose on the ball. Im going to check wristpin bearings and rerun compression check. If all is well there ill pull the flywheel and inspect magnets. When i put her on the water again ill record a clip so you guys can kinda hear whats goin on. Thank you all for your help id be lost w/o you ;)

thinking time for a mechanics stethoscope... priceless for finding funny ticking sounds...and all other internal noises...locating them as well. Can also make you flat paranoid 1st time you listen to an engine lol they make a bunch of noises..... also dont get it caught under flywheel (or in a fan belt auto issue)

....and dont ask me how i know that.

Do you have a stereo installed in that boat? If so you need to turn up the volume on the stereo, the ticking will go away. :D

How loud is your ticking compared to the engine exhaust? Just trying to get an idea of how loud it is. Both of my engines make a little bit of a sound you might describe as "ticking", but it's really not all that loud.

As far as it being associatied with the lower unit, it is possible. The drive shaft and gears are constantly turning, even in neutral. In neutral the clutch dog is midway between the gears and therefore not turning the prop shaft. (Did that make sense?)

Re: E120tlco Ticking That Increases with Rpm

Turns out it is the lower unit after all. I pulled the drain plug again just to check after i went through various other tests. And this time there are much larger chunks of metal stuck to the magnet also if you spin the prop while at idle you hear a slight ticking. :( I have the manual and plenty of patience any advice on whether or not i should attempt fixing this myself?

I'd pull it apart just to see what's going on before committing to one course of action or another. There's really not a lot of parts in there, but getting it apart is a little interesting the first time.

Ill give it a shot when i get a little bit of time off. I happen to have another evinrude with a perfectly good lower unit and I was curious if they were interchangable. Model number are E120TLCO (85 120hp) and E90TLCNB (82 90HP). Both have 20" shaft

I took apart my lower unit (115hp johnson) and it wasnt that bad with the manual. If you do take it apart be careful with needle bearings!! New gearcase rings and seal kit cost me about 95 dollars.
