E150, odd feeling removing from gear

I have a 1989 Evinrude 150, (E150TXCEM), on my last run before winterizing I was traveling slowly forward and felt a hard stop in the side mount control lever right before forward gear disengaged. I moved the lever forward about an inch and then back in to nuetral and it was fine.<br /><br />Does this suggest an issue with adjustment, or with the gears themselves. Or can't you tell untill adjustments are verified correct.<br /><br />The cable was adjusted properly, but with no locknuts on the thumbscrew adjusters they could concievably move. I did have RTV on the threads around the cable adjuster thumbscrews to try to keep them in place.<br /><br />thanks

Hi blue.monkey...<br />The problem may be in the control itself. Is this a flush mount or just a side mount control? What ever it is, this should be something you get repaired if there is a problem. Safety issue. I can think of few things inside a control box that could cause the problem you experienced. Lose fasteners for one thing. Let us know what kind you have.<br /><br />Jim.

Disconnect the Cable itself from the Motor and check it to see if it's sticking. Could be time for a new Cable!

The control box is not flush mount. It is the single lever OMC box that bolts to the side and has the ignition key in it. I will disconnect the cable and exercise the lever. <br />thanks

Do what rickd suggests and disconnect the control cables from the engine. Is there any losness in the cold start lever? There should be none. Except for some mods done to the control boxes back around 83'/84', the boxes have been pretty much standard to date, warning horn has changed also. If it did it once, may do it again so I can't emphasize the safety issue enough.<br /><br />Jim

Blue..... Seeing that your engine is a 1989 model, the following shouldn't pertain to your engine if the control box is also a later (1989) model control box.<br /><br />However, should that control box be one of the older boxes, the internal shift lever has extremely sharp edged teeth. These teeth were prone to chipping. The slightest chip of the teeth on that lever would result in a jammed shift. Shift lever part # 386542.<br /><br />Your problem may not be related to this but I thought I'd pass it along.
