This '86 30hp motor turns hard without the steering cable hooked up. someone suggested it might be the steering bracket bushings. Does the pilot shaft have to be taken out to do this? Can the lower bushing be taken out by taking the lower mounts brackets off only?

Thanks.

Have you tried greasing it ?? Is the friction lock set to tight ??

Yes I greased the bottom zert but there isn't any on the top so that might be where the problems is. I'll most likely have to replace both shims, according to an ex-mechanic I talked to yesterday. I will try to lube it several times first.

Squirt some PB Blaster around the top of tube, work the motor back and forth and see what happens.

You may want to also use a little heat in the upper area with a propane torch when using the PB Blaster.
