Went out to try the new smart tabs. It jumped on plane, went 100' and died. Restarted and no power. Got it back home, good spark on all 3, new plugs are in, checked compression and have 125 on top & bottom, 20 on the middle one. I don't see any holes in the piston, so I guess I'll tear it apart. Anyones guess as to what it is?

Head gasket be my guess - - cheap easy fix.

In any case, the head needs to come off. You should be able to tell what's wrong then.

Thanks, I hope a head gasket is all that it is. I should be able to pull the head off without pulling the whole motor, shouldn't I. I hope that's as deep as I have to go. Hope I don't see any scored cylinder walls.
I've rebuilt tons of motorcycle engines and several truck motors, never been into a boat motor before. Anyway, I can get some good hints right here. Darn, I wanted to report on my new Smart Tabs that I got from iboats. Well, it did jump right up on plane. Guess it's gonna have to wait.

If you can get away with doing one hole, probably ~ $500 to 700 for boring and parts. Let the marine machine shop tell you whether the other holes are withing service limits, then decide whether you want to proceed.

Can a 3 cylinder have one oversized piston? Would that throw it out of balance? When we needed a bore on a 2 cyl. bike motor, we always did both, and why?, the thing to do I guess.
The other 2 cylinders "looked " good, had good compression. If I can just do the middle cylinder, that would be the way to go.
Thanks wild1.

You can overbore just one cylinder.

Add the cost of a new head to that job!

It would be cheaper to buy another used (running)motor, wouldn't it ? Spending $700+ to repair 13 yr old motor seems a bit excessive IMO.

That's what I was thinking, Bonair, if I can find a good used one.

I'm not against rebuilding a motor per se...but have read to many heartbreakers where the owner rebuilt the motor only have it let loose again on them.

Rebuilding a motor is not just changing parts. The most important is to find the reason for the break down.
Carbs needs to be rebuild, and in most cases even impeller and thermostat change at the same time.
The above is probably not just a 'sudden death', but something that has been developing over time and the finally given in.
On those engines, one overheat and you squeeze the middle cylinder which may have started it all, even years back.

I agree, Haffiman, the way the carbon has built up in those ding pits, it looks like something has been rattling around in there for a while. I just bought this boat last March, finally got it running right. The improvement looks like it was too much for it. I'm still trying to decide if to pull the whole thing off and see what's inside. That's the only way to get the piston out, anyway. Shoot!

I just checked the cyl. wall. You can see some scoring lines, but you can barely feel them, all on the exhaust side. A hone may take it out. Guess I just need to take the cylinders into a boring shop and have them measure it all.

Bring it down here...to Mims, Scottsmoor. I will measure it up for you, and we can discuss. PM me if you want. Won't cost much to fix. Parts only.

Re: E60TLCCR no compression on middle cylinder

Any one with experience with milling a head, say 30 thousands, to remove the dings on this head? The pistons are flat topped and do not protrude above the cylinders. It would raise the compression, but would it hurt?
