I have an Eagle FishEasy 2 transom mounted on a 15'Bassmaster fiberglass bass boat. I have a fair amount of interference showing up on the screen even when stopped and the outboard is not running. Also, I can't get over half of wot before it loses its signal. I spoke with a representative from Eagle at a local show and he thought it was mounted too high. I really can't lower it any more so he recommended a shoot thru-hull transducer. How much do I need to grind the inside of the hull before I install it? Any other tips for the best results? Most of the posts on this topic spoke poorly of this type of installation, do I need to avoid it and just deal with my present situation?

There is nothing wrong with mounting it for thru hull use. Just kind of a pain to do.

Why can't you mount it lower on the transom?
What has worked for many people, is to epoxy a small plastic or wood block onto the transom. Make sure it does not extend below the bottom of the transom. Then mount the transducer to the block. You can move it around, up, down, left or right, till you get the right spot, without adding additional holes to the transom.

?? Bassboat?? How fast is half wot?
Mine works well up to about 25-27 mph, then I lose it.

It is as low on the transom as I can get it without the trailer bunks knocking it off during loading. It is as far to the edge of the transom as I can get it, and if I move it more to the center I get interference from the motor.

It is a small boat with a 40 Hp, WOT is around 27 or 28 mph.

lazydawg,
If your transducer runs out of the water regardles of speed you're going to loose signal. If your boat has strakes or ribs on the hull, its best to mount the 'ducer between these. Idea is for the 'ducer to run in undisturbed, non/turbulent water. To get it lower, why not shorten the bunk on that side? Whatever sticks out beyond the bottom of the boat serves no purpose anyway. A lot of people mount the bottom of the 'ducer level with the hull to protect it. Mine is a good half-inch or more below the bottom of the boat. I can read bottom up to 45 mph. Eagle's parent company Lowrance has some good reading on the subject. http://www.lowrance.com/Support/installation_guide.asp
JD

LazyDawg
I would adjust your trailer so your bunks do not extend beyon the transom. If it is not too far off all you need do is move your bow stop. If it is way off then you may also have to move your axels to adjust tongue weight.

Mount your transducer on the starboard side if you have a standard right hand prop. 12 to 18 inches should be plenty far enough to avoid interference. Transducer should point straight down and not aligned with the V hull. The left side of the transducer should have at least half of it below the hull. Do not line it up with a row of rivets or hull lifts or steaks.
