"Ear muff" question

I just picked up a 1960's vintage boat with an Evinrude Twin Ski 40. I want to run the motor a bit to check things out at home. I put on a set of what I call "ear muffs" (You probably know what I mean; don't know the real term); but it looks the intake holes are so close to a fin that I can barely cover them. Does that work ok on that model? Will they get enough water to keep from damaging things?
Thanks...

If you have a 60,s evinrude you have to use a bucket. Its a pin drive motor vs through hub exhaust.Muffs really wont work .

must be in a bucket or tub. its not a self priming pump so the water must be up to the lower motor mounts.

Thanks Guys. I don't actually know about pin drives, etc., but will take your word that the muffs aren't good. I had trouble trying to get something to put it in deeper than the intake holes. Maybe take those big fins off? Any other particular tips?
Thnx again...

No Title

There used to be a hose flushing attachment made for those motors. It was called a Tempo Flushette. They were model specific. If you get really, really lucky, you might find one. They quit making them long ago.

I've got one of those in my tool box and they work good. All I can say is try E-Bay or Craigs list to find one.

Reportedly the Honda Water Mouth Kit, part no. 06190-881-860 works the same way as the old Tempo Flushette, which doesn't come up on eBay. Can someone please explain where to put it on the motor; how it works? Thank you...

The pic in post #6 by FR shows you exactly what it looks like and how it's mounted.

I have a set of them out in my shop. Not for sale. But to answer the question, they clamp over the water intake screen on the leading edge of the exhaust outlet snout.

I have one of these too, it was in the original box and unused, it was my fathers, he had it tucked away in his shop, he lived on an island.

Does anyone know whether the Honda Water Mouth Kit (part no. 06190-881-860) really works for the old Evinrudes? (I figured out that mine is actually a 1971) I can get one for $15, but will it really work? Is it ok in regard to 175se's note about the non-self-priming pump?

Thnx...
