Ear muffs to flush yamaha 40hp? Nothing fits.

I have a 3 cyl 2 stroke. The water intake is shaped so that the muffs dont get a good seal, they kind of taper into the metal, so the water just gets pushed out the front toward the transom. Subsequently i get a trickle when flushing unlike when In the ocean.

I have a big foil on the leg so it wont fit in a big bin or a flush bag. Any ideas?

Oh yes some engine water intake designs don't lean to flush muffs and unless you have a huge trash container, I can't think of any other way to run it safely then in the lake... We have huge trash bens issued to everybody for a once a week trash pickup. And I'm really sure your engine could easily fit into one of these trash cans, but I can't say another way not knowing your area or options...

Maybe you could build a 2" X 4" type wooden frame and line it with some heavy duty plastic sheeting to give you a water source to idle your engine in....just a thought!

Muffs rarely make a good seal on my 75hp Chrysler, but enough water gets through to warm it up a bit before I head to the lake. As far as for flushing goes is there a way to use a clamp on the outside of the muffs to force a tighter seal? Sometimes your only option is to find a bigger container, remove the hydrofoil, or take it to a fresh water lake and flush it there.

yeah i know the wheely bins you mean, wish i had one of those, i know what it would be used for. taking the foil on and off each week will be too much hassle. dont have a lake anywhere within 400km. ill have to be creative i guess. i thought it would fit in our garbage bin as our old outboard did but no way with the hydrofoil. not a lot of resources around here for getting big drums either.

interestingly it spits water out the holes just above the water intake fine, but only lightly streams from the top hole with the muffs.

I have trouble getting muffs to seal on my OB. Using a bungee cord, tightened on the spring, to tighten the "clamp" over the intake, gives a decent (sort of) fix.

not framiliar with the yammies, but on some motors you simply unscrew a fitting ( usually the pisser ) and screw the male end of a garden hose right into that spot.

Are you certain you don't have a thermostat on that engine? If there is one, it WILL take a while before it starts peeing. I don't know, just asking...

its a 40mhdl, do they have a thermostat?

the muffs rubber is hard, i think thats half the problem, i think sometimes the softer rubber ones are better providing the spring is tight. i could try tightning it somehow and see if it makes it better.

providing its trickling out its not going to overheat? it trickles until i reave it then it sprays but not as strong as id like. and yes its just been serviced.

Hold on, its only the very bottom of the leg with the water intake vents on each side that need to be in water? Well Ive a bucket that can sit in, the foil might push down on it but it should work?

No thats no go, the manual says water must be up to wear the foil is, bah!

I thought about a 40gal plastic drum but even they arent wide enough. I need 650mm wide container.

^^^^I'm gonna try that in the spring. Sometimes the obvious is so far out of reach for me.

around the edges of the muffs? the water will just push out through that. perhaps i could wrap it tightly around the muffs. also i read you dont need the water pressure turned all the way but clearly enough to supply enough water.

then you are not using the right duct tape. the stuff I use is rated for 100mph

Yamaha are notorious for not pushing water on a hose by their design. Nothing short of submerging the LU will improve the flow

If engine has 2 standard side water intakes, just buy a single or double water feed ear mufs and modify the muffs, This simple solution betters the overall water intake pressure. Can use a belt, rubber belt, bongee rope....

Now thats something I have considered already, using my ratchet strap to tighten it. Where do you get those epoxic retainers from?

Those epoxic retainers are self made. What you need to do is place round ears on middle water intakes, then mark with white marker the portion passing the engine sharp edge, release the mufs and make expoxic retainers were marked, that way strap, bungee rope will hold nicely on to it and avoid backing and consequently lose water pressure.
