Ear muffs to flush yamaha 40hp? Nothing fits.

Boatfisho, what I was saying in a previous post was that you can take a few two by fours and build a solid wooden framework and then buy some thick plastic and line that frame work and staple it to the frame and fill it with water and run your engine in that setup. It doesn't have to be anything fancy or even last long. But a mere framed up tank, sort of speak, to allow you to try your engine. Just don't go wild with the throttle and it will work quite well... Just a temporary suggestion... :thumb:

yep thats a good suggestion. just i have no tools. my other option is cutting side out of a 40gal plastic drum.

sea rider what are these epoxic retainers called aside from that and where did you source them? i can see this system working quite well.

I believe Sea Rider made those retainers. I don't think they can be purchased. You just need to fabricate something to prevent the belt from sliding off the bracket thus loosing pressure against the muffs.

You have to make those donut retainers from any material that will hold well to the thick metal wire, can you believe were placed 15 years ago and still holding excellent. For a perfect fit, with hand push both rubber ears to slightly come in contact between them, adjust belt, cord, bongee rope, whatever used tight.. When mounting muffs through lower tail will achieve a nice seal as opposed placing muffs against water intakes and then adjusting rope... The ear muff's wire is very smooth, once wet will definitely back up rope if retainers are not placed onto wire to stop rope becoming off wire.

yeah i just cant find anything that will suit as retainers. i tried a strap but it just slid off.

one thing i noticed with the expensive muffs is they are a soft rubber, so clearly grip and mould much better than the hard plastic rubber of the mid priced ones i have.

You could try some chain rope clips like these. They can be purchased at most hardware stores.

I've done the tub idea with my 75hp Chrysler before.it worked okay I left the water hose running in the bottom of the tub which helped as my Chrysler has an exhaust snout above the prop which would push water over the top of the tub when I reved the engine up a bit. I did learn how to spray water at my son with the throttle that way. Pretty funny to watch him dance out of the way when I sprayed him.

what did you make your tub from?

i was thinking marine ply and just a sealant in the corner. not like its going to leak faster than the hose feeding it. just worried wood might dislodge and get into the intake, perhaps a bit paranoid. plastic would be better but cant find an afforable bin/drum wide enough to for the foil to fit in.

I actually used a plastic storage container from Lowes. The kind people use for Christmas decorations and such. It worked pretty good. My out board doesn't have a foil on it so it didn't have to be very wide. Just long enough, and deep enough.

yeah i looked at storage containers. not long enough. needs to be 650mm long and about 450mm deep minimum.

Your idea of a plywood container will work. Instead of using marine plywood though I would use regular ply wood then line it with 6mil plastic to contain the water. Sort of like having a trash bag in a trash can. That would kill two birds with one stone so to speak. You wouldn't have to worry about picking up any wood particles from the plywood, and the plastic would protect the wood from the water. For that matter using plywood for 4 simple walls, and the 6mil plastic as a liner you could build it like a cheap pool is built. With no bottom other than the liner. You could use contact cement, and duct tape to attach the plastic to itself to form the liner.

If your straping is long enough...
Start on one arm of the muffs, Pass behind the drive leg,
Then make a full loop in front of the drive leg and the cross behing the leg again to attach to the other arm of the muffs.
Essentially a figure "8" around the leg. It will tend to pull on, instead for slid off.

What sort of plastic would I use to line it? Didnt know there was such a thing, or u mean literraly a trash bag? Not sure how long that would last.

thanks UW, i had actually considered a figure of 8 but the tie down i had was a bit short so ill try it with another i use for the trailer. worth a try.

You can buy plastic in different lengths and widths in rolls at most hardware stores. It is a similar material as garden trash bags only it is much thicker. It comes in 4mil, 6mil, and sometimes 8mil thickness.

I've seen plastic storage tubs that large. Maybe blocked up w/ milk crates or? to get it the right height.
