Early 70s HP change

Yesterday I was told that in the 70's the horsepower ratings changed. If that's the case, Why? Also, I have a '68 Evenrude 100s Starlite. What would the horsepower be by today's standards?

The change from HP rating at the flywheel to the propshaft happened in the 80s, Dennis. Why? Damfino.

Your 'Rude probably has about 90HP at the propshaft.

The propshaft includes gearing, etc.
