Early 80s 18hp merc shifter

Im wondering how reliable the gear shifting inside the throttle handle is...I’m thinking of buying a used engine but would prefer the separate gear shift style. Do anyone know how sturdy this merc system is.

It is very reliable one of my favorite systems.

Is it prone to any particular problems? It seems like the separate gear shifter would be sturdier.

You might be able to get a conversion kit.-----Talk to a dealer.

?----The factory must think it is reliable because they used it for more than 20 years,----Some identical " MARINER " models used a separate shift handle.----Same motor without the cables shifter system !!

as a gear select method, its pretty bullet proof.
