The HIN was issued in Australia in 1996

If it has one, it should be, upper, outside, starboard, transom. (Upper, right, on the back outside). The last two numbers generally indicate the year.

Usually the HIN is molded into the hull at the time of manufacture and not 'issued'. Perhaps you could post the number that shows on the upper starboard area of the transom.?

The bow and stern rails are all stainless with welded joints which I am told is unusal for Bayliner they seam to be original

HINs became required for boats in the US about 1971-72. A 1978 boat would definitely have a HIN.

Re: Early Bayliner Tri-Hull

Maybe I am the wrong track with this, when I got it 2 years ago it had the Bayliner name on it in stick on letters and on the rego papers, it had a 20 gal fuel tank in each side at the stern, there was a tag on each tank "1980" made in the USA,it had a Type 1 or R outdrive which I have changed to a MC1,the motor is a 165 Mercruiser which looked to be original,HIN did not start in OZ untill mid 80's maybe it was built in Australia, the plot thickens!!!!!
