Other than compression check and listening to the motor run what else should I look for when purchasing an older outboard like this? One of the boats I am looking at has a Johnson 200hp and the price of the boat/ motor seems too good to be true, but as usual the owner claims everything works "perfectly". Also, should I expect the owner to let me run a compression check? It sure is an easy procedure on these old outboards, but it can take some time.

You don't say how old, but you should be able to do a compression test and at the very least run it on muffs to listen for any "loose bits" expect to replace the impeller though.

I have bought a couple used outboards.I check compression and check gear oil for water and metal chunks.I have learned from my last engine to check for a working tach and to check the battery voltage with engine running to see if the charging system is working. This is just my 2 cents.I am sure the mechanics will chime in soon.Good Luck

Have the owner take you for a boat ride.
