I am new to the SX models but have been studying the history. My main question; is there any reason to steer clear of an early model SX-ST 3868046 1.66:1?

I have talked to one person at a parts place and more or less was told to stay away from the SX-S and the SX-C models due to parts availability and to stick with the SX-M models based on my transom shield.

I have also been told that most parts interchange between all models between 1993 and 2006. That stops when the SX-A was introduced.

What say you?

I don't see why you should avoid an early SX drive. A quick search on a Volvo Penta spare parts site reveals that almost any spare part (with a few exceptions are available)

And yes, many parts do interchange between the models and years.

To my knowledge, the early SX drives doesn't have any major problems. Some SX drives tends to give a harder "clunk" than others, when engaged.

I would avoid the composite drive, but not an ordinary SX, even though it's an early model.

Well I would be inclined to agree. I'm thinking I was mislead, although maybe not intentionally, but right after saying stick with the SX-M models he mentioned they had some for sale. Thanks!
