Early-to-mid 60s outboard motor

I have an old 12hp outboard motor probably dated between 1960 and 1967. It was made by Chrystler, but sold by Sears. I don't have a model number, but I need to know a couple of things. First, it smokes real heavy when running, so I'm thinking the oil-to-gas ratio is wrong. Do you know what the ratio would be? Also, what would the carburator adjustments be for high and low speeds? I've tried finding a manual through the library, but it is not available. Would you know where I can find one cheap?

There were two 12hp engines sold to Sears in the 60s, the McCulloch chainsaw derived 12hp (40:1 mix) and the West Bend 12hp (20:1). I don't see any Chrysler, but since West Bend was purchased by Chrysler in '65 I think this is the outboard you have. I'll bet it smokes at that ratio too!<br /><br /><br />Usually you set those carbs pretty much the same way. Start and warm the engine, and take off full throttle on the boat. Turn in the high speed control until the engine starts to sputter then back it off 'till it's good, and then a bit more. It's better to be rich than lean at high speed. Then slow down to idle, and turn in or out the low speed control until you get the best idle. Then up to full throttle and recheck.<br /><br />But that's just general advice. You'll doubltess find better in a service manual.

i have a '59 elgin 12hp made by west bend, and run it at 20/1 and still smokes like a chimney.<br />check on the handle for a serial # plate.<br />west bend models will start with 571 ***** model#

If it is indeed a West Bend, these are a great old motor, and you can't go wrong mixing 24:1. I probably have all the service info on it if you can find a model #.
