Using earmuffs on a 1963 40 hp Johnson super seahorse what should happen???

1.Should water come out of the discharge holes without turning the motor over or is it necessary to actually run the motor to attain the circulation???

I tried applying the water through the ear muffs and hand cranking the pull rope with the spark plugs out but still didn't get any flow out the discharge holes.

Next I tried just bumping the starter and still no action ----I'm assuming the pump is toasted but I did expect to see evidence of water flow with the forced input.

Please share your experiences with me.

Thanks,

Moe

Re: earmuffs

You probably wont get any water past the pump unless it is rotating.

Run it and see what happens if you don't get water out the tell tale (if there is one). Check the vents on the exhaust you should get water out there.

If no water from the discharge holes when running don't run it for more than a few seconds. It may take a couple of seconds for the water to make it's way there though

Re: earmuffs

should have added. if you don't know how old the pump is it might not hurt to replace it. They only last a couple of years. Cheaper to replace the pump than what will fail if the pump does.

Re: earmuffs

Thanks Gonegatorfishing !

The old motor has been sitting idle for several years---I've bitten the bullet and got it in the shop---was told the impellar would cost twenty bucks and labor would run about 45 for a 65 dollar total---I guess that's a fair price when I don't have a manuel.
Before taking it to the shop, I did start the motor for short blast and still no water.

Thanks again,
Meaux
