Re: Easy Boat Seat Cover
Can you sew or know someone that can?
I just started recovering my boat seats and found that it is really easy, especially the straight bench seats.
I thought it was going to be hard with all of the tucks. But I was wrong.
The vinyl will cost ya anywhere from 10/20 a yrd. but you don't need much for a few seats.
you'll need a good sewing machine, doesn't have to be highend..
- Use a size 14 leather needle
- Buy Sunguard thread
- vinyl.. your choice, shop around on net for good prices.
- Stainless 3/8 or 1/2 staples.
- Some hidem, covers the staples.
Once you take one of the seats apart, you'll see how easy it is.
All you'll need to do is sew the top part of the seat and then the rest of it is rolled under and then stapled to the bottom and the staples are hidden with the hidem.. if you care about hidden them..
Even the nice tucks in the the seats are easy.. usually an extra piece of vinyl sew'd in the seem and the stapled to the wood through the foam..
Just take a seat apart and you'll see how easy it is..
I would say, removing the old staples was the hardest part.. get a staple remover tool for this..
There are two ways you can make you patterns to sew.
take the old vinyl apart and cut from those.
Or
Use the foam as the guide. Lay it out on the vinyl and then cut from there.
Either way it ok. Just make sure to leave a little for the seem.. But not too much.. the vinyl will stretch some.. so I've learned to cut just about even with my foam. this way you don't have many wrinkles.
have fun.
If you need links to places to buy from.. I can send you some.
