Easy guide steering wheel on 3/4 teleflex shaft.

I have a vintage boat which has been upgraded to a teleflex steering system. I’d like to mount my classic square hole easy guide steering wheel on the 3/4 tapered shaft. People talk about an adapter for this, but I haven’t been able to find one. BTW I do not want to go back to the easy guide cable system. The telelflex is better and parts are available. I just want to mount the old Steering wheel on the newer hub.

Grant makes an adapter to the 3/4 shaft of the teleflex for custom wheels. I’m thinking I could cut it into the square tapered shape for the easy guide wheel.

some of the metal clad epoxies from enecon (epoxy with 100% metal solids - used for shaft repair)

wax up your tapered shaft with the key in it (or you will never get the steering wheel off). you will have to make sure the key is in the corner of the square. you also have to verify the key protrudes out of the square hole a bit

mix up some enecon

fill the back of the square post hole in the steering wheel

use tape to keep it from oozing

brace in place until the epoxy sets (a few hours)

you have now adapted your steering wheel to the new tapered/keyed shaft

enecon is one of many companies that manufacturers a 100%solids metal epoxy. I would recommend any that have a 9,000 PSI compressible strength or higher using stainless or titanium as the filler. do not use aluminum
