My brother-in-law swears that you can use easy-off oven cleaner to strip paint. He said he used to use it on old tractors. He said he would use the regular non-scented type Easy-off. He would spray it on, let it set for a while, and then power wash it off. He said it always did a good job on taking the paint off.

Has anyone done this? Has any one heard of this? Does anyone have anything they could try it one? PM and I'll reimburse you for the Easy=off if you give it a try.

If it works I wonder if it would be bad on aluminum?

I have heard from some on this board that it works. I would clean it off completely after getting the paint off. I have been blasting my paint off using crushed walnut shell as a blasting media on my boat. That's not a bad route to go. Go buy a can and spray it on a test spot and see what it does.

Easy-Off is fairly expensive. The money you will spend to strip an entire boat may very well be more than you would spend on an actual stripper. It does work very well as a degreaser though.

Thanks for great info. and test results.

I wasn't sure about the cost of Easy-off. We haven't cleaned our oven in who knows how long. To be honest, the wife doesn't use it all that often, but you wouldn't know that by looking at me. lol

Never thought about using it as degreaser, interesting.

So if I try it you would take my (random internet person) word for it? but don't trust your own brother-in-laws experience?

Just pointing that out because I was amused by it. Cool-Aid turned into a paste is a great degreaser too! Used it to clean the grills in mess hall on-board our ship when i was in the Navy

Never used easy off....but Napa brand (probably any brand though) spray gasket remover makes SHORT work of paint.
I used it to strip powdercoating off a snowmobile before....works almost too well!

I did add something at the end, I just found it completely amusing that youd trust a complete stranger, and pay them to try it, but wont trust your own brother in law, who has done it. Says alot for your brother in laws character. Learn to take some things as amusing, lifes too short to take seriously...trust me I know

Ayuh,.... If you guys with tin boats are worried 'bout Expense,..??
Why, O Why are ya strippin' 'em to Bare Metal,..??

Aluminum is a pain in the butt to paint....
Paint sticks to paint quite nicely...

Sand the existin' paint smooth, 'n prime it with Primer, 'n sand it smoother,...
Then Paint it....

No fancy washes,...
No fancy primers,...
'n None of the Expense of 'em....

This is better than the comedy channel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well if nothing else was accomplished, you were spot on with my ability to clutter a thread! Anyways, 90% of what i say has to be taken in stride, I am quick to speak whats on my mind, sometimes abrasive, and if you dont learn to call me an arse within the first meeting I did something wrong! Honestly though, I will have a few useful tid bits of info buried in a pile of sarcasm, if you can find the humor in my way of thinking and read through it....It wasnt meant to offend, or normally isnt. Since that texan chimed in, I thought maybe being neighborly and all, we should pick on the tumble weed instead!

my friend......one of the great things about iboats forum...... is that all opinions are allowed....no bashing of other posters.

just like we say there are no stupid questions. like easy off for a paint remover. ;)

ok my friend?

iboats is not like other forums on the internet....it is actually full of people that want to help people, and make new friends.

i have now met personally over 50 iboaters and all of them are really cool ! i have spoken to over 100 of them on the phone. glad i did !

we will gladly help you do what ever you want to your boat....its your boat....you can do what ever you want to it !

but if you want the truth.....you have to respect other peoples opinions.

cheers bud
oops

i recommend peanut butter for repairing boats....!!!!!! how silly is that?.....but read on , and learn !

cheers bud

IDK about Easy Off for stripping the entire finish off but I used it to take a sponsor's name off our racecar with quick results. I managed to get the name off without damaging the base paint. I believe the sponsor's name was just paint over the clear coat.

Re: Easy-Off Oven Cleaner to Strip Paint

Amazingly this does work. I read about it a few years back on a car forum http://http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=167756. I tried it on a car and it didn't remove all of the paint; only the softer layers. I did buy a car that had been primered over the original paint and I used great value brand oven cleaner to remove it down to the original paint. It even polished up to a nice shine! I used the same oven cleaner to clean up an old single door fridge yesterday that had a rusty patina all over it. It looked like a peach when I got it and the oven cleaner took it down to the original paint, removing all the rust and making it bright white. Aside from the scratches and deep blemishes, it will polish up like new! I highly recommend using oven cleaner, just wear gloves and test it out first. I don't know what it will do with fiberglass but I plan on cleaning up an aluminum valve cover tomorrow!

Here's my 2? worth. Easy Off is made for cleaning ovens, NOT stripping paint. Paint Stipper is made for Stripping Paint, NOT cleaning ovens. Why would you not use the product for what it is made for? I'm an Okie Redneck and a Cheap Old Curmudgeon but sometimes I just don't get it.

Steps to remove paint from aluminum with Easy-Off Oven Cleaner

Step 1) Go to store

Step 2) Find cleaning products aisle

Step 3) Locate Easy-Off Oven Cleaner

Step 4) Read the label

Step 5) Place product back on shelf

Step 6) Return home or your Internet access location

Step 7) Tell us what you found.

Not wanting to be a smart alec, read the following and save the gas;

Can EASY-OFF? Heavy Duty Oven Cleaner be used on any aluminum?
We do not recommend using this product on aluminum, as it may pit and discolor it. However, it does not penetrate into the metal or remain on the surface after the recommended rinsing instructions have been followed. Utensils and appliances cleaned with EASY-OFF? Heavy Duty Oven Cleaner are completely safe for use in cooking or serving food after they have been thoroughly washed and rinsed in a vinegar and water solution. *

* found at www.easyoff.us/faq.shtml using Google

I like the word "pit", just what we try to avoid in AL. Just what did your BIL remove paint from?
