Eating sparkplugs

1972 65hp evinrude, I will be out on the lake and my engine will be running fine then all the sudden it will act like its running 1/4 throttle on full throttle I replaced the spark plugs for the second time its done this and every time it runs fine for a while afterwards, I even cleaned the carbs out today with carb cleaner, maybe im running to rich and messing up the plugs or even the engine is out of tune, not sure how to idle could that be the problem? any help would be greatly appreciated

its got the oil splotches on it basically all over so spots look like thick oil

How strong ya' mixin' the oil in the gas?

Try to rig up some kind of spark gap and make both sparks try to jump a 7/16 gap to ground, when pulling cord or crancking by starter. Will both do it with strong blue flame ? If not or weak, thats probably the reason for fouling plugs, and reason to look into ignition.

im running the right amount of oil for the gallons of gas

Did you take the carbs off and soak them?

Lets start from the beginning -- what spark plugs are you using?

Me thinks...............<br /><br />That perhaps you have an intermittently failing component of the ignition system and by the time you pull and check out or replace the plug(s) the component in question has cooled enough to become operable again.<br /><br />You may want to run some diagnostics on the stator, coils, or switchbox (if so equipped) during the time of problems.<br /><br />I have also seen where debris left in the float bowl would find it's way into the carb jets only to fall out and back into the bowl most anytime any attempt to diagnose or repair was made. Thinking it had been corrected till about the middle of the lake. Arrrr! Again!

The sparkplug is Chapion L76V, yeah its an older model boat im sure some the electrical parts could use some replacing, I might as well get the carbs overhauled again.

yepblaze, just recently when I turn the key nothing has happened acting strange i can get it cranked by running cables directly to the starter then sometime the key start will work every once in awhile not sure if this problem has anything to do with the engine not running right..
