Ebay concern

I won an item on Ebay yesterday that is going to cost me over $400. My concern is that the seller did not have a Paypal option. He also did not have shipping info. I am cool with that because maybe he needs to get the shipping amount first, he might not be one of those gougers that just charge whatever they feel like for shipping.

As soon as the auction ended, I sent an email requesting the total including shipping, and I also asked if he uses Paypal. I stated in the email that I only pay for items on Ebay using Paypal. I have not recieved any emails from this person other than the standard issue auto generated Ebay email.

If he writes back stating he does not use Paypal and only wants a money order or cashiers check, I will have no choice but to back out of the deal. I will not take the chance. At least with Paypal I am assured that I have recourse in the event the item never gets shipped or the auction was a scam. There is no way on earth I will part with over 400 bones to a stranger and hope it gets sent.

If he does use Paypal, then the world is a great place and if he tries to scam me I will have the amount charged back, I have done it before on deadbeat sellers.

Maybe I am being impatient, but if I stood to make over 400 bones on something, I would be getting that total to the buyer ASAP. Maybe I am spoiled by my other transactions on Ebay. I like to pay immediatley, and I like my items shipped immediatley (with reason, I know they can't ship on Sunday).

Another thing that is kind of aggravating me is I bought a $100 GPS reciever for my fishfinder and a CD on ebay last Sunday the 20th. The GPS reciever was shipped Priority and was at my house Wednesday. The CD, which could have been shipped good old fashioned 3rd class mail should have been here by now, yet it hasn't. That agravates me.

I sold two items Friday night on Ebay, and shipped them today. One item I shipped Priority because it was small and there was no reason not to. The other item I shipped UPS, and he should get it at the end of the week.

I don't know, something just doesn't feel right about my current purchase dilema. I hope it goes through, I really have needed this item, but I will not hesitate to back out if it gets flakey.

I just don't trust people anymore I guess...I remember when Ebay first started and there was no Paypal. I just sent the money order and the item always arrived, and people actually communicated.

Maybe I am just paranoid....

Dang Blu Lunch, that guy was horrible. Odds are his profile got hacked somehow. That happens on occasion.

Xtra, he has one negative, from someone who insisted he didn't answer their questions. It seemed unreasonable to me. All his other feedbacks say "Fast transaction", "Great Ebayer", the usual. Who knows...

I got jacked a year or so ago by a guy who had all positives. I won the item, paid through Paypal, and never saw the item. He never answered my emails. I gave him the required time Paypal wants, and they returned my money to me from his account. Never heard from him, it was wierd.

All I know is Ebay says right on its own site that money orders and cashiers checks are not safe, and that you stand little chance of getting your money back if the item never arrives. Me, I am not taking that chance. If it was $30, that would be one thing. I am talkin' real cash here.

Re: Ebay concern

Jason, use the contact button and get his personal information. Exchange telephone calls and I imagine your fears will be either lessoned or confirmed.

Paypal has a horrible "shrink" to it and nails everyone for about 4% add that to listing fees and final value fees and on 400 that can be alot of money.

I run 3 ebay sites one for work, one as a joint venture with another guy and one for myself. I accept paypal on all three just to avoid the hassles and get paid faster.... but yes paypal is a rip off.

Here is my feedback only 1 neutral in the past 6 months and the guy was flat out unreasonable. I have little tolerance for people who swear at me and threaten me on the phone. My feedback at work http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=360moto&ssPageName=STRK:ME:UFS I ship UPS and USPS only.... depends on the item.

A suggestion..... where is the item you purchased? Are there any iboat people near there? Being Retired Army I have contacted recruiters in various areas around the country as had them assist with leg work.

Hmmm linking not accepting the whole thing got to c & p

If the auction does not say he accepts paypal, and you bid on it without first contacting the seller, that would be 100% your fault, and not the seller's. When you make a bid you are making a legally binding contract with the seller to pay the amount specified. If you back out you will probably get a well deserved negative feedback and non paying bidder complaint sent to ebay.

I wouldn't pay $400 for something in a money order either, but I also don't bid on non paypal auctions.

And then later on the tooth fairy will come over and you can both smoke pot while riding a unicorn. ;)

HaHa....Seriously, they have returned my money from deadbeat sellers. At least there is that chance. The same cannot be said about money orders.

It is true that I should have looked closer for the Paypal deal, but I assumed (and that was my first mistake) that he, like most people used the service. I can't say I care much about a negative feedback or bidder complaint. I am the only one who decides how I spend my money, not Ebay. What are they going to do, take away my Wal-Mart priveledges?

Anyway, I should probably wait until I know for sure there is something to worry about before I do too much worrying.

Jason, always check the terms prior to bidding.
A negative feed back won't kill you.

Re: Ebay concern

I got burned on e-bay a couple of times years ago. I won't purchase unless it is thru some secure mode. Go with your gut feeling. I never had a problem with paypal. As a matter of fact someone hacked my account a couple years ago and paypal made it good. I feel safe using paypal.

Tell him your position on payment. If he is legit he should understand your concern. If he doesn't....back out gracefully.

I'm with spinner. You shouldn't expect paypal if it wasn't in the listing.

It's only been a day, relax.

Some people may not get back to you immediately because:
They work unusual hours.
They work long hours.
They got sick.
Their isp is down.
They had to go out of town for a day or two.
Their computer crashed, modem broke, etc.
Family member got sick or injured.
Someone died.

I won an $1900 item on Saturday, from a seller with a ZERO rating.
Listing only showed Paypal as a payment option.
Emailed them and got approval to pay cash when I pick it up.
I did this before I bid.
This will give a chance to inspect the item and walk away if it is a total scam.

^^^^^
That works great if the seller is close to you. Tougher if across the country.
Jason said he overlooked the payment part....took for granted it would be paypal. Mistake? Yes.
Does this mean he should follow thru if he doesn't feel comfortable? I wouldn't risk that kind of money.

As Bondo would say, Ayuh . . .

It'll happen if he wants to sell it and you want to buy it . . .

A recent show on Forensic Detectives featured an Ebay scammer that was sent a ups bomb. Killed him, of course. Indiana trucker that mailed it from Ohio was busted by the batteries he used...and his mouth! He couldn't keep from gloating about it.

Re: Ebay concern

The only reason I assumed he has Paypal is his ratings, all of which state "Fast Payer" and all that. To me, fast means electronic payment. I do agree my missing the lack of paypal listed in the payment options is my fault. I'll just have to wait and see. I still havn't heard from him, and I still havn't recieved my CD from the other place, but I am giving them thier allotted timeframe for receipt before I get fussy.

Just so you know, it is a complete power tilt/trim assembly for my inline 6 Merc. I have been wanting power trim forever, and I have yet to find any sets cheap, so I figured I would bite the bullet. I just want to use the darn thing before my season is over...

Re: Ebay concern

Jason.... did you request the contact info? It is located on the advance search page and you need his ID and auction number. The response is near instant. You will get a working phone number... if you do not then you have grounds to report him to ebay. I would call him.

Re: Ebay concern

Well, I was contacted. The person who was selling the item passed away a week ago. His son noticed the pump was wrong so the widow contacted me and said I didn't have to go through with the sale, so I opted not to. Oh well...
