Re: ebay service manual

I haven't had personal experience on the cd manuals I prefer the actual manual.I have 8.
I have heard comments like the cd is a pain to use.I would think you would need to print out the section you needed in order to get it to your motor.I don't know if I would want a computer or lap top in the shop, garage or back yard where almost anything could happen to it.

Re: ebay service manual

Personally I prefer flipping through the pages of a paper manual, however if you can print off what you need then you will always have a back up on the CD and on your computer.
Flip the coin !!!:)

Re: ebay service manual

I bought one once ( 9.9 OMC) and it proved to almost useless. My buddy bought one for his Yamaha and it was great. Since then I have only purchased the original paper service manuals for the model and HP. Not cheap always but they sure save time and guess work. Best of luck. Rick.

I bought one. I haven't looked at it yet. I figure for $5 if I get anything at all useful out of it then it would have been worth it.

Not worth the shipping charge.

A Service Manual is the last place to scrimp. Get the OEM Manual from www.outboardbooks.com

Re: ebay service manual

I was suckered into buying what was advertised as an O.E.M. manual for my Mercruiser...what I got was a poorly scanned reproduction of the SELOC manual that I already owned. I called SELOC and they said that they knew that their publications were being pirated on eBay, but that they have stopped trying to stop the thieves. I filed a copyright infringement complaint with eBay, and the seller dropped his auctions after about a month, although I have no idea if this was due to my complaint.

I will bite the bullet and go to the dealer for any future manuals that I might need!

Happy boating...and Merry Christmas!

Re: ebay service manual

I had heard that most of them were scanned from aftermarket manuals. Also, that the QC was not there, alot of information near the margins was unreadable and the scan quality was not very good...

agreed.

Except in some cases. The digital manuals will rock and be very worth it, with search functions, good quality, bookmarks, etc.

However, you wont find these in manuals prior to 2007.

The rest can be worthless depending on scan quality.

and keep in mind the people selling these, just downloaded it themselfs, so if they can do it, you can do it.

google search for things like-

Johnson manual PDF download
manual download outboard PDF

etc etc...

I have a fair selection myself.

Re: ebay service manual

CD's are for music or banking...lol
if you haven't seen the inside of an OEM manual, be prepared to split the corners of your mouth from smiling...I had my doubt's beforehand, and the price made me hesitate, but it's been the best educational book i've bought in years. Those 'clyloc-semors' type manuals look like a library with a sad index system,{ie: good luck finding what you want/need in a reasonable timeframe}. With the OEM manual and the knowledgable fine folks here who are gracious enough to offer support and proper guidance, there's nothing to hold anyone back who wishes to diy.....just my thoughts! :p

Re: ebay service manual

bought one, nothing more than a scanned pdf's of the seloc manual as others has stated, mine was actually missing a chapter as well! for the most part, a useless manual, however, for the five buck i paid for a digital download, it did orientate me with my motor, and outboards in general. So I don't consider it a total loss, but about as close as you can get.

Re: ebay service manual

Caveat emptor...buyer beware. CD manuals are useful if they are done correctly. I use both. I keep the CD manuals in my "library" so when I trash a printed copy, and it happens in the shop, I have a back up that I can print a new section from when I need it. I also have some original printed factory service manuals that I keep in the shop...but heaven forbid, a fire, thief or other peril can take those from you.
Bottom line is buy what you need, in the form most useful for you...and know what you are paying for...if they won't answer your questions and provide a sample, keep walking.

Worth considering that most of them are probably stolen property.

Violating copyright is stealing.

Re: ebay service manual

the cd manual I have is a scan of seloc, I believe, and possibly another...so it is pirated (I have both seloc and clymers). There is an added feature I found nice was that it had a quick troubleshooting guide. The cd manuals are hit or miss from reading others opinions. The ones I had were decent quality.
