Edelbrock Carb???

End of last summer I bought a Cruisers Holiday and need to get it running right this year. It has a Mercruiser 898 5.0, this should have a 2 bbl on it but the PO put on an Edelbrock Performer intake and an Automotive Edelbrock carb when they had the engine replaced. Should I scrap the carb or is there really no difference other than springs on the floats in a marine carb? I an thinking that there is more than that but don't know. I am leaning towards scraping it and getting the factory stuff. I am not thinking that this will fix my runnability issues but like to start with a proper base before I go chasing problems.

Do you run in salt water or???

The guy I bought my boat from had put an Edelbrock aluminum intake on and it was crap when I took it off. Supposedly only had about 100 hours of salt water use over a couple years on it but I dunno thats what he said.

But what I do know is that if you boat in salt water and use an aluminum intake manifold it will turn to dust. lol

The vacuum hookups on the front of the carb are a dead giveaway that that is an auto carb. Not marine rated and can cause fuel to vent into the engine compartment.

So if you run in fresh water the intake manifold may be ok but the carb is an auto carb and should be replaced with a marine one.

I have an Edelbrock 1409 marine carb and it works great.


Check everything that need to be marine and make sure it is. Dist, alt, starter, fuel pump, etc.

If you get stopped for a safety inspection you are gonna get nailed with that carb on there. That is a very dangerous setup you got going on there.

Thanks for the replies guys, one of the first things that I did was go through everything to make sure it was marine stuff and fortunately it is. I am in fresh water so I think that I will keep the intake, but am now in the market for a carb as it turns out.

What are everyone's thoughts on the best way to empty the fuel tank, it has 3/4 right now. Want to start with fresh gas. It is mounted under the bed in the cabin and would be a pain to remove to dump. I was thinking of using an electric fuel pump from a car but this way would take a while.

I used one of those $20 or so hand pumps from West Marine.

It took about 30 mons for me to pump 35 gallons of fuel/water out.

The only thing is that the pump will be garbage when your done but it's only $20 or so.

Siphon it. If youre on a trailer, yove got lots of vertical distance,no problem. Many ways to siphon, some approved some not. One foolproof way is to fill hose with fluid FIRST, hold thumb over outflow end, stick suction into tank,lower outflow to your receiving can, remove thumb and reach for beer.The Egyptians probably perfected this technique.

Siphon it.

That's not going to work to well if the tank has an anti-siphon valve.

I used an automotive fuel pump to empty my tank, worked nice.

True,true.
I meant stick the siphon hose into the tank thru filler. Alternatively I guess one could remove the anti siphon valve from engine fuel supply line, which would take a minute or so, and siphon using engine fuel supply line(extended to reach over side of boat to ground).Just a low cost option, if one didnt have a pump.

So I got the new to me carb yesterday in the mail. It is a quadrajet off of a 260 hp mercruiser, my question is there is a what looks like a fuel overflow port on it where does this go? It is on the side of the carb not the vent on the the top. I don't have my manual yet, its on the way from e bay just thought I would pick your brains.

You could have gotten the manual for free if you wold have asked. I think what you are referring to is the port where your fuel pump sight tube goes.

If you post your engines year or better yet your engines serial number you could have a manual today...

I dont have the serial number but the year is a 1979 mercruiser 898. I thought the manuals were taken down?
