Edelbrock Engine need help!

Hello! I have attached two pictures of a V8 350 engine. I need some guidance on how to take off the valve covers? The black exhaust maifolds are in the way to take off the valve covers. They are leaking and I need to seat the gaskets and seal them properly. If anyone has experience with this, please post back. I'm at a loss on how to get the valve covers off. This is a 60's jet boat. I tried for an hour and no go. Thanks in advance!

In the hour you've mucked around, you could have pulled the exhaust manifolds and been done already. Make sure you drain your cooling system as completely as possible before hand especially if you're in salt water. Saltwater and engine oil don't mix.

Awww a fellow squirt boater......

First you will have to remove the rubber exhaust hose from your risers. Next you will need to unbolt your exhaust manifolds from the heads. Then you will be able to remove the valve covers. Pretty straight forward....The cooling water should have drained out of the manifolds and a partion of the block when you pulled the boat out of the water, unless you are running check valves on the cooling lines prior to the exhaust manifolds. So what is that green looking bottle thingy for, you have hang'n off the front of the carb???

Just a note, don't try to just put some sealer on the old gaskets to keep them from leaking, get some new gaskets. Any auto parts store will have the valve cover gaskets for that engine. Also make sure there are some metal straps (See picture below) under the bolts that strengthen the edges of the valve covers. And makes sure the gasket surface on the valve cover is flat.

PS: When you go looking for valve cover gaskets, it's a Chevy engine, not an Edelbrock engine only the valve covers are Edlebrock.

When you go to the parts store don't skimp on the cheap gaskets. If they have them ask for the MOROSO Perm-Align GAskets. They have a steel core encased in rubber. They do not squeeze out or leak. And like Don said make sure you have a set of the hold down straps. Oh and while you are at it switch to studs with a nut on the outside. They will help align the gaskets and the covers. The problem here is the hot.. close to each other...middle exhaust..heats up the cork and ..well, torches it..(happened to me)..some things just need replacing ALONG with usual manifold change.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies! Much appreciated.

The green thing is a make-shift funnel that's all.

I tried undoing the bolts of the maniflods, but couldn't get them off. Perhaps I missed a bolt. It's hard to get under the engine.

As for gaskets, they are brand new. but, because they are a pain to get to because of the manifolds, the guy who worked on it didn't put them in properly and that's why they are leaking oil. so, I want to put it back properly and stop the leak. The oil completely drained out of the engine because of the leaking out of the valve covers.

Great tip on the valve covers. I'll check them out and if they are warped I'll get chevy ones.
