Re: EFI Upgrading Questions 87 2.3

Well, the cheapest (not 100 percent legal) is to get an efi setup off of an automotive 2.3 and convert all parts over. This would include the wiring harnesses, sensors, and connections. The next step would be to flash/retune the computer to work with the cams installed in your boat for marine use. This would tune in all fuel/ air ratios. Make sure you get a sealed distributed cap, use dielectric grease on all connections, and install an out of tank high pressure pump/reservoir for fuel demand. Unless you have hardware/software to tune the efi computer in, you will lose reliability and efficiency changing it over. Try telling the computer you midrange powerband through 4-5 gears just changed to a one gear low powerband without changing fuel demands. All parameters shot (especially with no o2 senso to assist in the tuning.

perna, I totally do not agree with your opinion. Safety IS #1 on the water, and tossing a cobbled up mess that would take FOREVER to setup is NOT safe!!!!

wtsgems, have a look see!

120 i/o: I understand it isn't the safest and easiest to set up, as well as wouldn't recommend it to change over. I didn't state any opinion except that it is the cheapest way to set it up answering his questions. I believe 100% about safety being first on the water, also.

perna, Opinion, or not...maybe I should have used the word "suggestion", whatever the case may be, I'm not here to split hairs!

I do not believe this to be economically viable either as far as "cheap" goes either. Chances are if it's in the salvage yard, it's there for a reason. A used engine alone around here is 300 bucks (may as well buy the motor whole) + computer + wire harness + all the missed odds N ends + all the head aches involved. A carb WILL bolt on, be ready to use in minutes, and will be under the cost involved with a "injection" changeover plus it will be legal, and last, but not least.....it will be safe! Im 10-7 on this thread!!!!!! (this means signed out to non radio users)

LOL
Safety is first and foremost important
I have been doing some research on EFI Aftermarket systems there are actually some safe economic. choices even legal.
that is not outrageous in pricing and is coast guard approved. there are three other suppliers that claim to be marine certified. at least in part.
As to safety and economics, almost all engines are EFI today that has to point to something
As said I am still looking into pricing and restrictions
My understanding the only fabrication that I would need to make is the intake manifold being a 4 cylinder with a side mount actually makes that a fairly simple task.
Scrap yards could be more trouble. than they are worth. for one EFI systems have fault cutouts. that may be active due to collision many units have safety cut off when they detect collision
they also have other monitoring system checking the transmission or rearend and so on
I can post my research but do not want to seem to be advertising,
Mods do you want me to do so? or post this information and build on a different thread?
