Re: EFI versus PROMAX

I could easily be wrong, Spinner, but I believe the Promax is a racing engine with a higher RPM range and different torque curve. If you are looking for a motor for yourself on a bass type boat I would go EFI. If you want to haul a$$ and race, Promax is the way to go.

I have no experience with the Promax models, but my brother had a 2.4 liter racing Merc engine on his Hydrostream HST. Went about 100 MPH, but he also spent a lot of time doing repairs. In my experience, the higher the performance, the more the parts to repair cost and the more often you are doing repairs.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

gotcha sangerwaker. Thanks
It is on a 20'er bass boat and has been well taken care of and that is the biggest reason I ask to find out what if any bad things were wrong with them.

Only has 45 hours on it. A 2002 model.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

Is it just an EFI model or is it an EFI Pro Max? And if so, which Pro Max?

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

It's a 225 ProMax. That's what it says on the hood.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

That there would be one screamin machine. I would have to guess 75+ would not be a problem if set up properly. Sorry, Spinner, I don't know a lot about the Promax's other than they are FAST. Especially if on a jackplate and have the low water pick up lower unit.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

The fellow told me that Gambler set this up on this 209 boat and that it should run right at 80.
He also stated that he had never had it anywhere near that.
EDIT: I guess that would make it a 21'er then.

He is about 60 or so and I think he is telling me the truth by looking at it and the other stuff he has, cars, trucks, etc. All clean as a pin and all well taken care of.

He also said he would take it anywhere I wanted to have a marine tech check it over good. He is that sure of it.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

Gets kinda freaky (to me) at those speeds unless you have a tunnel hull. I'm not familiar with that particular hull either.

Sounds like the guy is on the up and up if he's willing to do that for a buyer. If the price is good, and you like the boat and set up, go for it.

Wish somebody else with more info and/or knowledge/experience would jump in here.

I did a little googling and it does appear to be a pretty popular motor among the bass boats.

Here it is sitting at the dealer that keeps it for him inside. They had it out washing it off.
Man, that thing looks fast on the trailer! It is set up to boogie. Don't know much abou the fishing electronics, but the rest is high end stuff. That gray lower unit is a speedmaster with the low water pick up. Hydraulic steering is VERY nice on an outboard of that size.

I guess they put that, low water pick up, because of the hydraylic jack plate on it, I reckon.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

If its of any concern, some of those motors required high test fuel. But he probably already told you that.

The Gambler should do quite well. Nice boat. I'm not sure about 80 but close. Find out what prop hes running, that will tell.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

Dhadley, he says Ballistic, 13&3/4X27 4 blade is what is on it.

And yea, he mentioned something about it performed the best on 93 octane.

Hummm....a Bull-istic on a nice rig like that. Go figure. Just think what it'd do with a good prop. It cant be a stock prop.

Anyway, a neat ride. Every one I've seen has been exceptional as far as workmanship. If youre up to driving a pad V, then go for it. Personally I'd much rather have a good pad bottom than a tunnel anyday.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

I know the guys "says" you can have another mechanic look at it... Make him "prove" it.

If the other mechanic say it's OK, then go for it.
I wish I had a dime for every salesman that said "trust me, it's THAT good"!

Remember also... Just cause the boat can go that fast, doesn't mean you'll be able to the first trip out. Feel it up a little, get a good confortable handle at about 60-65 MPH. Make it prove it has no bad habits... Then, and only then... AIR IT OUT!

It honestly looks pretty good in the picture... If I were a serious fisherman, I'd have more trouble with the "other motor" than with the big one.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

Thanks Dhadley, just what he says.

Rabidfish, this is not a salesman saying this, it's the owner of the boat.
It is just stored at a dealer.

Thanks all for the replies.

Dhadley, I see our opinions are pretty similar on the "Bull-istic" :D . They are an OK prop, but you can do so much better for the same money.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

That's one area that I lack in and that is props.
I have a Laser II on my boat right now and it does a good job. A 13.5X24 3 blade.

Re: EFI versus PROMAX

Amen to that! But the carring case was neat. I guess they knew it'd be in the case more than on the motor.

I cant tell you how many times we've talked to someone who bought an identical rig to someone else's and cannot figure out why his buddy is faster, quicker and more efficient. Then we find out he has a Bull-istic. We get him into something like a Stiletto and poof! He's as good as or better than his buddy.

Hey, maybe thats why this guy is selling the boat. He's unhappy with the performance vs cost. SBN -- that rig is a prime canidate for a good Mazco prop. That'll make it come alive!

Naaa, he's selling cause he lost his fishing partner last month, his wife. :(

Well, I am still thinking about it and will contact my tech today to set up an appointment to check it out and go from there.
